Even behind bars Kim Wilde isn’t safe

It seems such fun to be famous, but oh… how hard it can be. That’s the opinion of Kim Wilde, at least. The 21 year old singer is admired by thousands of fans. Fans who will do anything to get an autograph of their idol. But Kim thinks they are too fanatic at times…

“Of course I think it’s great that my singles ‘Kids in America’, ‘Chequered love’ and ‘Cambodia’ are doing so well. I get to see a lot more of the world and I even get paid for it. But on the other hand it can be a nuisance to be recognised everywhere on the streets. I can’t even go shopping these days!’.”
It’s Kim Wilde, the singer who managed to get half of Europe at her feet within six months. Kim can’t be erased from the public mind. But sometimes she would like to be the unknown girl she was before.
“I realise very well that I have my fans to thank for my success. But sometimes I am very afraid when I’m almost pressed to bits between autograph hunters. They are so fanatic at times, that I wouldn’t even feel safe behind bars”.
Photographs also make Kim’s young life difficult. “A few weeks ago I had a date with Steve Strange, the man behind Visage”, says Kim. “Steve had arranged a table in a very cosy restaurant in the center of London. I was really looking forward to it. But when we went into the restaurant, I saw them: countless photographers, ready to take our picture. Somene tipped them off that we would be at the restaurant around that time. Of course it bugged us. Such people don’t understand that artists have a right to a private life as well. Would you think they would like it if they were being chased around all the time? I think not. That’s why I would like to ask them to leave me alon. Then I can live like any other girl of my age!”
