Finnish song for Song Contest deemed plagiarism

Finland, which ended with zero points at the very last place last year, risks being disqualified for this year’s contest, months before the final in Munich on April 23.

The Finnish audience has elected the song ‘Fantasia’ by Kari Kuusamo, which is performed by his wife Ami Aspelund, but experts and amateurs recognise plagiarism of the hit ‘Cambodia’ by the British singer Kim Wilde in the song.
Newspapers in Finland answer the question whether composer Kuusamo had heard ‘Cambodia’ when he wrote his ‘Fantasia’. It’s hard to tell whether the likeness is mere coincidence or not. After having gotten the prize for the worst song in Europe last year, which often went to Norway in the past, Finland now seems to have to take care about international copyrights.
