Move It

Song written by Ian Samwell. Originally recorded by Cliff Richard and the Drifters (the UK band that would evolve into The Shadows). Originally the song was recorded to be a B-side to the single ‘Schoolboy crush’, a cover of a song recorded in America by Bobby Helms. When producer Jack Good heard the song ‘Move it’, he insisted that Cliff would sing this song instead of ‘Schoolboy crush’ on his TV show ‘Oh Boy!’. The planned single was flipped, and climbed to number 2 in the charts, starting Cliff Richard on a career which included British hits through six decades. ‘Move it’ is credited with being one of the first authentic rock and roll songs produced outside the United States. Cliff Richard himself describes this song as “my one outstanding rock ‘n’ roll classic”.

Kim Wilde sang a version of ‘Move it’ on Chris Evans‘ breakfast show on BBC Radio 2 on 8 November 2013 together with Cliff, who was also a guest on the show.

Lyrics

Come on pretty baby lets a move it and a groove it
Well shake oh baby shake oh honey please don’t lose it
It’s rhythm that gets into your heart and soul
Well let me tell you baby it’s called rock ‘n roll

They say it’s gonna die but honey please lets face it
Well we just don’t know what’s a going to replace it
Well ballet and calypso’s have got nothing on a
Real country music that just drives along
Well a move it

Mmm mmm come on pretty baby let’s a move it and a groove it
Oh shake oh baby shake oh baby please don’t lose it uh huh uh
It’s rhythm that gets into your heart and soul
