The hit here is “You Keep Me Hanging On”, an inspired Supremes cover that makes the most of both Kim Wilde’s petulant warble and brother Ricki Wilde’s slick Hi-NRG production. Sure, it’s formulaic, but it works, which is more than can be said for some of the other tracks here. Wilde’s voice is engaging enough, and lends itself well to the hookish, well-crafted pop that has become her stock in trade. But her delivery is too mechanical to add much to the material, which ultimately makes the music sound even more manufactured than it would otherwise, from the cliched chorus of “Hit Him” to the inane sentiments of “Schoolgirl”. Stick with the single.
