Most tars would love to be asked to co-present The Big Breakfast but for pop star Kim Wilde it really was a dream come true. Not only is it her favourite show, but Kim reckons she’s Chris Evans’s number one fan. “Having to travel all the time to promote my singing career means I don’t always get to see the show,” says Kim, 33, who is standing in for regular co-host Gaby Roslin. “So my Mum tapes them for me and I watch them in my spare time. I’ve been so busy recently though, I’ve got a whole stack at home which I just haven’t got round to.”
Although this is Kim’s first experience of television presenting, she and Evans have worked together before. “I used to listen to Chris when he was a DJ on GLR”, says Kim. “He had such a wonderful sense of humour I was dying to meet him so I got somebody at my record company to get me on his show and we did a couple of bits of radio together.
Wilde and Evans renewed their acquaintance earlier this year when she appeared on The Big Breakfast with the madcap alien puppets Zig and Zag. “I had such a good time when the producers rang me last month and asked if I wanted to co-host with Chris while Gaby took a break I said yes straight away,” she says. Despite the enjoyment of the new job the singer has no plans to abandon her music career and seek a job on TV. “For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be a pop star,” says Kim whose father Marty Wilde had a string of hits in the Fifties. “My next and probably last job as a presenter will be when I co-host the Australian Music Awards later this year. I’m looking forward to that because I’ll be performing as well.”
