Former 80s pop star Kim Wilde and Two Fat Ladies TV presenter Clarissa Dickson Wright would not appear to have much in common. But they are both big supporters of the Holker Garden Festival, which starts on Friday. The celebrity pair will attend the event again this year in the grounds of Lord and Lady Cavendish’s Holker Hall home, near Grange.
The garden festival takes place soon after another successful Cartmel race meeting, again hosted by Lord Cavendish at the South Cumbrian course. If the weather stays fine Clarissa and Kim will be joined by thousands of green-fingered enthusiasts for the annual gardening extravanganza.
Celebrity gardener Kim has the task of creating a Wonderland Garden within a tight time frame of three days. This will include living willow, whimsical characters and life-size chess pieces. Clarissa Dickson Wright, along with country author Johnny Scott, will launch their new cookbook on game at the event.
Other attractions include stalls and features to keep the children amused, an array of food stalls, crafts for every occasion, live music, a number of feature gardens and a demonstration of the art of dry stone walling. Organisers promise plenty of fun and, more importantly, gardening tips as several renowned horticulturalists will be at the show.
The Holker Garden Festival is in its 12th year and for the first time visitors will be able to visit the event’s newly-opened food hall. Tickets are still available by advance purchase and organisers are anticipating another successful event. Ordering in advance means visitors will make a saving on the gate price.
All advance tickets are open dated, therefore visitors can choose which day they would like to attend.
The event throws open its gates at 10am on Friday and is open on Saturday and Sunday as well.
