More than 5,000 visitors turned out to a pair of sunny bank holiday spectaculars – the 50th Lemsford fete and a classic car show in WGC.
A host of attractions were on offer at the village’s largest ever fete, including a twist on the traditional “guess the weight” stall.
Visitors to the annual event, held at St John’s School and St John’s Church, were invited to guess the weight of the gravedigger’s tractor.
Other attractions included vintage cars, bird display and the WGC Brass Band. At least £8,000 was raised – a final total has yet to be announced – half of which will go to St John’s School and the other half to local charities.
Headteacher Robin Archibald, said: “The help the stallholders and organisers give is testament to the fact that community spirit is not dead. It’s not just about raising money but about giving people an experience while they are here.”
Treasurer Geoffrey Hollis said: “We were really lucky with the weather and stacks of people turned up, around 4,000. It all went very, very well.”
Elsewhere, fundraisers saw a special breast unit move one step closer to reality as more than £3,000 was raised by a classic car show at WGC’s Stanborough Park.
Cash collected from the day means the total raised for the East Herts Breast Unit Appeal has now smashed the £100,000 barrier.
Television presenter and 1980s chartbuster Kim Wilde went along to the show and gave a speech thanking everyone for coming, before indulging in a spot of line dancing with her husband Hal.
Attractions included more than 100 vintage cars and motorbikes, a pair of caravans from the 1920s and ’30s, a tombola and various other stalls and attractions.
Organiser and fundraiser Vicki Adkins, said: “It was lovely weather and there were some lovely cars there. There were plenty of things for people to do and it was a nice social event for families.”
