Kim Wilde warns on social media

Unlike all the primped and designer-clad modern female pop stars, Kim Wilde, 60, confesses she cut her own trend-setting spiky hair and dressed in scruffy charity shop cast-offs when she first made her name in the early Eighties.

‘I was the classic rebel without a cause. I rebelled against high fashion, about how elitist it was. I took aim at that by shopping at Oxfam and cutting my own hair. I was a 20-year-old with attitude, making a statement without actually saying anything.’

Meanwhile, Wilde, whose hits included Kids In America and Chequered Love, is glad she was not around in the era of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. ‘I think my message to younger people now is: “If you don’t want to know what people are saying about you, don’t go on social media.”‘
