With “Kids in America” and “You came” she created songs for eternity in the 1980s. Now Kim Wilde is back with a new album “Closer”.
Kim Wilde is making an impressive comeback with the album “Closer”. The British pop icon, known for hits such as “Kids In America”, “Cambodia” and “You Came”, is musically following on from her successful album “Close” from 1988 and reviving the characteristic mix of new wave, pop and rock.
“It feels like the natural companion to ‘Close’ from 1988,” explains the 64-year-old, “and I think it perfectly reflects where I am musically today.” The pre-release single “Midnight Train” with its dense synthesizer sounds and pulsating drums takes you back to the heyday of the 1980s.
“Scorpio” also takes you on a journey through time, as its intro is suspiciously reminiscent of Kim’s biggest hit “Kids in America”, and the duet “Sorrow Replaced” with Midge Ure (Ultravox) also exudes melancholic nostalgia. Nevertheless, “Closer” sounds surprisingly fresh, modern – but also familiar. This is mainly because Kim’s voice seems to have hardly changed in the past decades.
The release marks the singer’s first studio work since her 2018 album “Here Come The Aliens”.
To celebrate the album, the 80s icon is going on a major tour this year: in March in her home country of Great Britain, and in November also in Germany, among other places. No dates in Austria are planned yet.
