Cover Friday: Lawnmower Deth

Kim Wilde has released many songs during her career. Some of them have been covered by other artists. On Cover Friday, Wilde Life presents cover versions of Kim Wilde songs. This week: Lawnmower Deth.

Fans who keep track of these things will know that Kim Wilde has mentioned a few times that Lawnmower Deth's version of 'Kids in America' is her favourite cover version of one of her songs. In 1987, Dogg Bower, Dudd Hallam, Rich Brady and Chris Flint formed as SCRAWM, renaming themselves Lawnmower Deth after releasing one demo. The lineup also changed: Flint recruited Pete Lee, Steve Nesfield and Chris Parkes. They signed to Earache Records in 1989 and released their debut album 'Ooh Crikey It's... Lawnmower Deth' a year later. That album  was followed by the band's only single in 1991: a cover version of 'Kids in America'. A promotional cd-single features no less than six different versions of the track: two 7" mixes, a punk rock mix, a dub mix, an extended mix and - rather bizarrely - the De La Deth mix, which leans towards the rap genre, whereas the other versions are definitely trash metal material. The track also appeared on their 1993 album 'Billy'. After breaking up in 1993, the band reformed in 2008, mainly for playing liveshows and festivals.

At the beginning of this month, Lawnmower Deth's cover was played by Simon Moyo on his Drivetime show after a 'drivetime confession' by a listener which mentioned the band. As a result the BBC stated that they were flooded with calls regarding the band wanting to know more. As a follow up, on December 3, Simon Mayo called Peter Lee and discovered that Peter had been washing up during the previous day's broadcast. Immediately after the airing of 'Kids In America', his telephone didn't stop ringing. The song has now become subject of a campaign to become this year's Christmas number 1 in the UK. If you download Lawnmower Deth's 'Kids in America' between December 19 and December 25, it will help get the song in the UK singles chart - and hopefully get  this timeless song a number one hit for the first time ever.
