Kim Wilde has released many songs during her career. Some of them have been covered by other artists. On Cover Friday, Wilde Life presents cover versions of Kim Wilde songs. This week: The Shields.
If you were at Kim's recent live performances in Rüdesheim (Germany) and Purkersdorf (Austria), you will have heard Kim's semi-acoustic version of 'Chequered love', which she has described as "a cover version of the Shields' version of Chequered love". And this came about because she was particularly impressed by the recent cover version by alternative rock band The Shields.
The Shields are a five piece band formed by Luke Elgie (guitar, bass, vocals), Richard Sutton (guitar, vocals), David Williams (guitar, synth, vocals), John Martindale (percussion, bass, samples) and Tom Larthe De Langladure (drums, vocals) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. On February 26 this year , they released their debut album 'How can we fix this?', described by Guardian Music as 'the first great new debut album of the year'. Last week, RAK Singles club released a 7" single featuring a new track called 'Swallow me' and a cover version of 'Chequered love'. As you can hear, it is an inspired take on Kim's second hit single.
