Kim Wilde's first records were written and produced by her father and brother, Marty and Ricky. The three of them have had a great influence on the music world, as this regular series 'Wilde World' shows.
Marty Wilde wrote 'Ice in the sun' for Status Quo, who had a top 10 hit with it in 1968. There aren't a whole lot of cover versions of that song around, but the 1996 recording by Arjen Lucassen is a nice exception. Lucassen is best known for his project Ayreon, which started a year before. 'The final experiment' was Ayreon's debut album and mixed science fiction with medieval themes. 'Strange Hobby', released in 1996 without the Ayreon moniker, was a collection of cover versions played by Lucassen. The album was a commercial loss, mostly because Lucassen hadn't made a name for himself in the music world yet. In later years, the album became a collector's item, and last Friday it was re-released with four bonus tracks. On this album, his version of 'Ice in the sun' appears, along with covers of songs like 'Sloop John B', 'See Emily play', 'Daydream believer' and 'Norwegian wood'.
Ayreon, meanwhile, became better known in 1998 when the album 'Into the electric castle' was released. Between 1995 and now, Ayreon has released eight studio albums and two compilation albums. The most successful release was '01011001' (2008), which made it to number 2 in the Dutch albums chart and number 18 in the German albums chart.
