MCA's first compilation album of Kim Wilde's greatest hits, which was made in collaboration with EMI to include all the hits which Kim released since the start of her career. Originally slated for release in April 1993, it was pushed back when EMI France decided to release a re-packaged version of The very best of Kim Wilde called Love blonde: the best of Kim Wilde, 'The Singles Collection 1981-1993' went platinum in various countries. It subsequently paved the way for the Hits tour.
The compilation album featured 16 of Kim's biggest hits, plus two new tracks: If I can't have you (which by the time of release of the album already landed in the singles chart) and In my life (which was released as a single later on).
This album contains the tracks Kids in America, Chequered love, Water on glass, Cambodia, View from a bridge, Child come away, Love blonde, The second time, Rage to love, You keep me hangin' on, Another step (closer to you), You came, Never trust a stranger, Four letter word, Love is holy, If I can't have you and In my life.
An updated version, The Singles Collection was released in France in June 1996.
The inner sleeve of the album features a selection of Kim Wilde photos through the years, from a.o. her second tour, a portrait with her brother Ricky and publicity shots from 1987, 1990 and 1992. The four photographs used on the front sleeve are uncredited.
'The singles collection 1981-1993' was originally released on LP, cd, tape and the short-lived DCC format.
