A rare television appearance for Kim in 2000. She appears on GMTV because she is one of the judges of GMTV’s ‘Garden of the year’ campaign, alongside Diarmuid Gavin and Andy Sturgeon. Kim is first interviewed on her own about her new gardening career, which she combines with parenthood. After a break Kim, Diarmuid and Andy discuss some of the weird gardens they saw during their judging process. Four finalists are chosen, and they are presented in short moveis presented by Andy during the month.

Kim and Toby Buckland go head to head in Manchester in the last episode of Better Gardens in the first season. Both gardens are quite big. Kim wins this episode, chalking up her third victory in five appearances. Quite impressive!
In the same episode, the winner of the Grand Prize is also announced. Contrary to the other episodes, this grand final is recorded in February 2000, and features ‘Kim after the pregnancy’. Of course, Carol asks her whether her success in Better Gardens will lead to an end of her singing career, to which Kim replies that ‘it will be on the backburner for a while’.
The winning design is not Kim’s and did not feature in any of the programs where she appeared in.

At the start of the first series of a new ITV program, “Better gardens”, we are immediately presented with one star designer. The news of Kim joining the team of this gardening show hit the press in the UK in the summer of 1999, when this series was recorded. Kim is already carrying Rose by then, and this will show in the five episodes she’d recorded for the 8 episode series, broadcasted in January and February 2000.
In this first episode, presenter Carol Vorderman takes us to Northampton, where designers Ross Allan and Kim Wilde will redesign the gardens of two neighbours. Fans are treated to very untypical shots of Kim, at least, during the 20 years before. Kim is carrying toilets and other old junk out of the garden, working in the garden and seeking out the right plants to fit into her design.
It’s Ross’s design which wins this episode, however, making the owners of the garden eligible for winning the grand prize at the end of the series: a summerhouse worth £100,000.
