Kim is interviewed by Lidia Antonini.

‘I’ve always loved my birthday’, says Kim Wilde.
Kim, Sabrina would say ‘Kimmy’, Kim Wilde is a real popstar.
‘I did really fancy being a popstar when I was 20, I mean, that really did appeal to me a lot, you know. I can’t pretend otherwise, and then all the stuff that came with it I was more than happy to take on board. But it wasn’t the reason why I got into it.’
Her father is Marty Wilde, a rock ‘n’ roller from the first hour. Her mother Joyce was one of the Vernons Girls. ‘That’s when it all started’.
After the big successes she devoted herself to her family. She became a garden designer and her music career is back again.
‘And it comes from a lot of different places, it comes from a very strong and happy family life that I have with my husband and two children, and our dog. And it comes from an incredible energy that I get from the audiences that I encounter these days.’
When she speaks about her family, she beams.
‘Just last year, last Christmas in fact, it was my gift to him’. She gave her husband a ring last Christmas, with the inscription: ‘Love conquers all’.
‘Rose, my daughter plays the piano and she sings very nicely and I think she will certainly wander towards the music world.’
Her son Harry is twelve and plays guitar on her recent album. And Kim’s brother Ricky?
‘The master creator, my Frankenstein, who created all the hits for me and the productions that made my career what it is.’
‘I’m happy either way, I’ve got a lovely life. The happiest parts of it no-one can take away from me.’
And there’s something else: ‘Every time when November 18 comes around, whatever year it’s been, since I was a kid, it’s always been a great day. And no doubt, my 50th will be a great day, one way or another.’
The question whether she has any fear for the 50th is answered like this: ‘Cliff Richard, apparently, he said that 70 is the new 50. So I decided that 50 is the new 30.’

Pre-recorded interview with Kim Wilde, interspersed with music: ‘View from a bridge (RAW remix)’, ‘Kids in America’, ‘You came’, ‘Lights down low’, ‘King of the world’.

I think it’s something we can all respond to. When you get to my age and look back, when I was during my twenties and particularly in my early thirties, always looking around the corner to see if something was just a little bit better for me.

That feeling’s gone. So that’s a very liberating feeling ’cause that allows you to live the moment. It’s one thing to say it, but it’s another thing to really live it. When you do live it, it’s very… I think the secret of life.

Yeah, well, our rooms were right next to – upstairs, where there were only three rooms, tiny little upstairs, so I could hear everything that was going on most of the time in his room. All I could hear was this ‘da-da-da-da-da’ and I was thinking ‘oh you guy, I’m gonna kill you in a minute.’ Little did I know he was writing my destiny.

‘Kids in America’ was a smash and I spent the rest of my life virtually trying to catch up with that success.

(About the nineties:) I’d run out of steam with it and I think the public had run out of steam with me.

I’m aware there are loads of people who don’t quite understand how a popstar suddenly… fingers turn green.

Today Kim Wilde really enjoys playing a star again. With her recent cd ‘Come out and play’ she goes on tour in spring, and a book is planned. In it, personal memories, no gossip. Not even the reported flirting with Adam Ant.
I think I kissed him, though, that was our thing. I didn’t want to, but I don’t think he was really into it. We drank a lot of coffee, I remember that.

Kim is interviewed via telephone. The Harmony FM team sings ‘Happy birthday’ for her, and a few minutes later she is interviewed by the presenter of the show.

Happy Birthday Kim.
Thank you very much!

And Kim also celebrates her birthday here in Germany. Where exactly do you celebrate?
Well, I’m gonna be in Dresden, and tomorrow I’m gonna be in Berlin, but today we are in Dresden. I’ve just landed, and we’re really looking forward to it. And I’ve had a lovely day. I got masses of tweets, and lots of birthday presents, and thank you very much for singing ‘Happy birthday’ to me!

How do you celebrate? Who is with you?
Well my brother is me, my niece Scarlett, who sings with me, my guitarist Neil and my drummer Johnny and my guitarist Neil, my brother Ricky – sorry I said that didn’t I? I’m a little bit excited. We’ve been rehearsing an acoustic set and we’re gonna be doing that later. So we’re just off on our way to have some fun!

Is it bad to become 50?
No, 50 is the new 30, it’s what somebody told me, I think it’s so true.

Are there any presents for you?
Yeah, I got a beautiful handmade present from my daughter Rose, and a poem, and I got 50 red roses from my parents, which look absolutely stunning. But I’m gonna have the rest of it when I get home. Share them with my husband and the rest of my family and open it with them. Had a great birthday cake!
