Another Step (re-release)

In September 1987, MCA Records re-released Kim’s 1986 album Another Step, featuring a more modest sleeve in black and white.

Tracks

The album is identical to the 1986 version, containing the tracks  You Keep Me Hangin’ On, Hit Him, Another Step (Closer To You), The Thrill Of It, I’ve Got So Much Love, Schoolgirl, Say You Really Want Me, She Hasn’t Got Time For You, Brothers, Missing, How Do You Want My Love, Don’t Say Nothing’s Changed. The cd and tape versions also contain the track Victim.
Three tracks are added on this release: the single versions of Another Step (Closer To You) and Say You Really Want Me, both of which were remixed by Ricki Wilde. The disc also includes an exclusive new Megamix of these two songs with ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’, made by Ricki Wilde and James Richards.

Artwork

The new sleeve design was made by The Leisure Process with photography by Laurie Lewis.

Formats

This album was released on LP, tape and CD.
Since the cd version of this re-release contained no less than 16 tracks it clocks in at 68’06, making it the longest cd so far released by Kim, not counting compilation albums.

Another Step (Closer to You)

Song written by Kim Wilde and Steve Byrd. Third track of the album Another Step. Kim and Steve decided at an early stage that this song was to be recorded as a duet, and they invited Junior Giscombe to do vocals on this track.
A few months after the release of the album, the song was released as a single.

Formats

The track was released as a 7″ single and 12″ single.

Music video

A music video was filmed to promote the single. It was directed by Greg Masuak and recorded in Paris.

Versions

There are four versions of ‘Another Step (Closer to You)’: two album versions, the 7″ version and an extended mix. The two remixes were made by Ricky Wilde.
The original album version appeared on the first LP release of the album ‘Another Step’ and the first Japanese CD of ‘Another step’. On all other CD’s, LP’s and tapes, released in the same year, and the 1987 re-release, the track was slightly remixed and contained some additional sounds.

Live performances

‘Another Step (Closer to You)’ was performed live during the Another Step tour in 1986, during Kim’s live tour in 2009, during the Here & Now Tour 2009, and during the Here Come the Aliens Tour in 2018.
Kim and Junior performed the song live together during the London shows of the Bad Tour in 1988.

Cover versions

‘Another Step (Closer to You)’ has been covered by Lynn Sweet. A version recorded by Junior Giscombe solo also exists.

Ricky Wilde about ‘Another Step (Closer to You)’

When we did the demo of the track, Steve sang the duet with Kim, but wel all felt that it needed more of a soul feel vocally. We chucked a few ideas around and came up with the idea of doing the duet with a great singer by the name of Junior. We phoned him up and asked if he was up for it, and of course he said yes – thankfully.
So Junior came up to the studio and we recorded the song in about three days. It was a great experience, and a great time was had by all. When we recorded the track, none of us realised that it was going to be the next single. When the decision came to be that it was, I decided that, for a single it needed to be ‘beefed’ up a bit. I kept the vocals and a couple of overdubs, but recorded all the rest using a Fairlight. (1)

Kim about ‘Another Step (Closer to You)’

I was surprised when Junior said he’d sing with me on Another Step because he’s a soul singer. This single has a definite rock feel. (2)

It wasn’t a record company ploy at all. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we’ll get the two biggest acts from CBS and EMI together’, it was just a matter of finding someone to sing the song with and his name just came up in conversation and I went ‘yeah’. And so it was spontaneous like all duets should be: at least we saw each other when we made the video unlike most people. (3)

When I started teaming up with Steve Byrd, he and I got on really, really well. He was an amazing guitarist, an incredible talent. And we used to have fun writing and ‘Another Step’ really embodied that. I was over the moon when it was a big hit and it encouraged me to carry on writing. (4)

Lyrics

Never, ever felt this way before
You are the one that I’am craving for

Another step nearer your heart
Another step closer to knowing you
Another step nearer your heart
I’m on my way

I never thought it could happen
Being close to someone like you
But you know this isn’t just a minute affair
If we make time and take a lot of care
I love everything about it
There’s such a good feel about it
And I know where I’m gonna be
If you take a step closer to me

I couldn’t even describe it
Though I tried I couldn’t find the words
When you’re stumbling through life
And love is one step away
Do you carry on or do you stay
We’ve got to promise faithfully
To hang on to each other and never leave
That’s the way love’s gonna be
If you take a step closer to me – come on now

The only way to deal with affairs of the heart
You’ve got to jump right in, doesn’t matter who starts
Take a step nearer, come over here
Together we can make it tonight

Another Step

Released on October 3, 1986, ‘Another step’ is Kim Wilde’s fifth studio album, and the second one for MCA Records.

Music

The basic concept of the album is that side A consists of up-tempo songs and side B consists of ballads. Kim got the idea for this concept after listening to Janet Jackson’s album ‘Control’.
The songs were written by many different contributors. Kim Wilde and Steve Byrd collaborated on three tracks, while Ricki and Marty Wilde wrote six, of which four were co-written with Kim. One track was written by Kim Wilde, one by O.S. Blandamer and one by Sembello, Rudolph and Donnell junior. Finally, the album inluded a cover version of You Keep Me Hangin’ On, which was written by Holland, Dozier, Holland.
Musically, the album featured a ‘harder’ rock sound, in which synthesizers were less prominent than on previous albums. The division between uptempo and ballad tracks was evident, but the ballads were partly mid-tempo songs, making the B-side sound diverse enough.
Lyrically, the songs included more love songs than before. There were a few exceptions: Schoolgirl for instance was inspired by the Chernobyl disaster and dealt with an environmental theme.

Tracks

The album contains the tracks  You Keep Me Hangin’ On, Hit Him, Another Step (Closer To You), The Thrill Of It, I’ve Got So Much Love, Schoolgirl, Say You Really Want Me, She Hasn’t Got Time For You, Brothers, Missing, How Do You Want My Love, Don’t Say Nothing’s Changed.
The cd and tape versions also contain the track Victim.

Artwork

The artwork was designed by Simon Marsh and features a photograph of Kim before a map of the world. There are two versions of this sleeve: in the first edition, the map was coloured by hand. Only months later, this first version was replaced with a more smoothly coloured red and green background.
Outside Europe, Australia and Japan, ‘Another step’ was presented with an entirely different sleeve, containing a black and white photograph.

Formats

‘Another Step’ was originally released on LP, cd and tape. The album was re-released in the UK in 1987, featuring some extra tracks.

In 2010, Cherry Pop released a remastered and expanded 2CD version of ‘Another Step’, featuring the original album plus 17 bonus tracks. This version contained almost all the tracks related to the Another Step album, with the exception of the original album version of Another Step (Closer to You) and the soundtrack version of ‘Say You Really Want Me’. Also, the urban mix of ‘Say You Really Want Me’ was missing – a different edited version of the track was labeled as such. Three tracks were recorded from vinyl because they were no longer available from the archives at Universal Records.

A further re-release of ‘Another Step’ happened in June 2013, when Universal released a so-called SHM-CD in Japan. This was the original album version remastered for a new “super high material” cd. This version came in a vinyl replica sleeve and had two bonus tracks: Loving You and Hold Back.

Kim about ‘Another Step’

Well, it was an idea that I had during the time that I was listening to the Janet Jackson album, her album is like that, the ‘Control’ one, and we’d finished the album, and also we had a lot of tracks and a lot of them were very mellow and a lot of them were up-tempo. And I thought it worked really well in a cassette situation. You know, like in a walkman, to have a ‘mood music’. (1)

Making ‘Another Step’ was a time of great insecurity for all of us. MCA were giving us a lot of hassle: they were putting a question mark over Ricky producing me and over every song we’d record. But its success has meant that Ricky, Dad and I are united as a team again, and we’ve resolved that we’re going to make another great album together. (2)
