Marty Wilde about ‘Christmas Fantasia’

It’s been such a tough year for everyone, and family and song are the two joys that I felt I could gift to people everywhere. After these isolating pandemic months, I felt it was time for me to step up and bring my own sprinkling of Christmas joy with ‘Christmas Fantasia’. It’s all there, sleigh bells, the festive message and the angelic voice of our beautiful daughter, Roxanne, who duets with me on this. You’ll hear the vocals of our little helper, Kim, on there too. Celebrating my 8 decades in music, I went back 80 years to when I was young, World War II restricted people back then, including the distribution of movies & live entertainment. As we face COVID restrictions, I saw a mirroring of now and then, and how the magical hope that Disney’s Fantasia brought to us all (despite WWII restrictions), was a symbol of hope and happiness. ‘Christmas Fantasia’ was conceived from that memory. Roxanne, Kim and I wanted to remind everyone that restricted times can still have pockets of magic, joy and music. That happiness and smiles can still be found, no matter what our hardships are. I’m delighted that my good pal, Brian Bennett, was able to help out on the production of this track. Happy Christmas everyone. (1)

Christmas

Christmas (or the Feast of the Nativity) is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on 25 December as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many of the world’s nations, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season centered around it. The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, delineated in the New Testament says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies.

Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving; completing an Advent calendar or Advent wreath; Christmas music and caroling; viewing a Nativity play; an exchange of Christmas cards; church services; a special meal; and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, and holly. In addition, several closely related and often interchangeable figures, known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Christkind, are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season and have their own body of traditions and lore. Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

Kim Wilde and Christmas

Kim is known to be very enthusiastic about Christmas and has always celebrated it with her family. Before Christmas Day she has often participated in radio and TV programmes celebrating Christmas and performing Christmas songs.

Christmas songs

The following Christmas songs have been performed and/or recorded by Kim during her career:

Cooper, Paul

Born on 22 March 1965, Paul ‘Coops’ Cooper is bassist in Kim Wilde’s band since 2017. Paul Cooper was already a bassist in the Hitchin-based band New Town Centres and joined Kim’s band after Nick Beggs left at the end of 2015. Besides appearing on most of the live shows since 2017, he also played bass on the album Here Come the Aliens and the live album Aliens Live.

Curry, Adam

Born on 3 September 1964, Adam Curry lived in Amstelveen (Netherlands) between 1972 and 1987. After working for various pirate radio stations using the pseudonym John Holden, he got a break in broadcasting as the host of the Dutch weekly pop music show Countdown in 1984. In this capacity he met Kim Wilde on a few occasions; interviewing her in early 1985 and in the summer of 1986. They recorded an hour long Countdown special for the European satellite channel Europa TV in 1986. Curry also presented several radio programmes for Dutch broadcaster Veronica.

In 1987, Curry became a VJ for MTV. Besides making spot appearances between music videos, he was also host of the programs Headbangers Ball and MTV Top 20 Video Countdown in which he interviewed stars like Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. While working for MTV, he also did radio work, including drive-time host for the New York City radio station WHTZ, and host of the national program HitLine USA. Between 1989 and 2009 he was married to Dutch singer Patricia Paay. They have a daughter Christina, who become a wellknown socialite in the Netherlands when she grew up.

While in the USA, Curry registered the then-unclaimed domain name “mtv.com” in 1993 with the idea of being MTV’s unofficial new voice on the Internet. Although this move was sanctioned by his superiors at MTV Networks at the time, when Curry left to start his own web-portal design and hosting company, OnRamp Inc, MTV subsequently sued him for the domain name. OnRamp eventually grew to 4000 employees and was sold to Think New Ideas Inc., another company that he co-founded, becoming Chief Technology Officer of Think. It subsequently grew to employ over 7400 people and with offices in seven countries, and was absorbed into Answerthink Inc., in a later merger.

After selling his business in the U.S., Curry and his family moved to the Netherlands in 1999, where Curry hosted a morning talk/music show for Radio Veronica. He also landed various television assignments and his family briefly starred in the reality show Adam’s Family.

In 2000 he and business partner Simon Cavendish, a participant in his earlier ventures, founded the RotorJet company to offer helicopter services. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2005. In the subsequent dispute, Cavendish seized the assets of the company, and in April 2005, Curry was ordered by a Dutch court to repay approximately US$3 million that he had withdrawn from RotorJet.

Curry founded PodShow, now Mevio, with his business partner Ron Bloom, in January 2005. PodShow is a podcast promotions and advertising company that encompasses the Podshow Podcast Network, the Podcast Delivery Network, and the Podsafe Music Network. Some of Podshow’s top podcasts are Curry’s own Daily Source Code, The Dawn and Drew Show, and GeekBrief.TV. From June 2005 to May 2007, Curry hosted a weekday evening show on Sirius Satellite Radio called ‘Adam Curry’s PodShow’. Curry is widely credited for popularizing the podcast medium.

In July 2012, Curry married Dutch model and photographer Micky Hoogendijk. On 29 January 2015, Curry announced that he and Hoogendijk had separated. On 19 May 2019 he married his girlfriend of four years, Tina Snider.

Colman, Stuart

Born as Ian Stuart Colman on 19 December 1944 into a well-known musical family, he took up piano and bass guitar and enjoyed his first taste of success when he joined Pinkerton’s Assorted Colours in 1966. Three years later, the group evolved into The Flying Machine and their first single under that name, ‘Smile a little smile for me’, made the top five in the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 1976, Colman jointly organised a march to the BBC, protesting about the lack of rock and roll music on BBC Radio 1. To his surprise, the corporation took him on as a presenter, headlining his own weekly show. Following the popularity of the programme, Epic Records wanted him to produce Shakin’ Stevens. His productions included the number ones ‘This Ole House’, ‘Green Door’ and ‘Oh Julie’. He was also called upon to produce a wide range of artists, ranging from The Shadows to Paul Kennerley, and Claire Hamill to The Revillos. Colman recorded a hit duet, ‘She Means Nothing to Me’, for Cliff Richard and Phil Everly, but his singles for the Liverpool acting family, the McGanns, and the Radio 1 DJ Mike Read didn’t take off.

By 1986 Colman had his own studio, Master Rock, in Kilburn; the first record to be made there was ‘Living Doll’ by Cliff Richard and The Young Ones, for Comic Relief. He followed it with another comedy hit, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, by Mel Smith and Kim Wilde. Apart from his own productions with Jeff Beck, The Inmates and Jane Harrison, the studio played host to Elton John, U2, Eric Clapton and Soul II Soul.

Still pursuing his broadcasting career, Colman then joined London’s newly launched Capital Gold, where he played rock and roll at the weekends and anchored the evening slot during the week. At the same time he was producing many major TV music specials for Central Television, where he worked with Natalie Cole, T’Pau, Nona Hendryx and Meat Loaf.

In 1995, geared by his love of American music, Colman decided to move with his family to Nashville, Tennessee, where he went on to record with a wide variety of artists including Victoria Shaw, Nanci Griffith, The Crickets and Linda Gail Lewis. He began by arranging and producing the country demo of the Faith Hill smash ‘This kiss’.

In 2002, Colman was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and he was subjected to an intense course of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Even so, during this time he wrote liner notes for many CD’s including a boxed set of Don Gibson recordings for Bear Family. Following his recovery, Colman appeared in a movie depicting the life and times of Jack Clement, and also reunited with Shakin’ Stevens playing bass on tours throughout Europe. Eventually Colman returned to the studios of Nashville where his energies were directed into developing a new set of artists. Then in the spring of 2009 he moved, this time to Manhattan where he married for the second time. His most recent studio projects included a debut album from the Hull based band, Moskow, preliminary recordings with the Italian tenor, Roberto IaRussi, and a new single from the five-piece, Yannick.

In January 2014, Colman returned to the UK to run his business from the Cotswolds. He died from cancer in a Cheltenham hospice on 19 April 2018, at the age of 73.

Curiosity Killed the Cat

This late ’80s UK pop group graced the covers of all the teen-pop magazines. The various group members all had showbusiness/theatrical backgrounds. The line-up comprised: Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot (born 19 May 1964, London, England), Julian Godfrey Brookhouse (born 13 May 1963, London, England), Nicholas Bernard Throp (born 25 October 1964, London, England) and Migi/Michael Drummond (born Miguel John Drummond, 27 January 1964, Middlesex, England). Volpeliere-Pierrot’s father was a celebrity photographer and his mother a model. Ben’s surname was a double-barrelled convolution of their surnames. His childhood was dotted with visits from various Beatles, Rolling Stones and other faces of the ’60s who held court at his parents’ home.
Volpeliere-Pierrot first played alongside the other members in the punk-influenced Twilight Children. Drummond was the son of a film and video maker and also brushed with the stars when his father’s company made videos for bands such as the Police. After discovering punk he took up drumming, and met Throp at art school before an invitation to join the Twilight Children. In mid-1984 Volpeliere-Pierrot was dating Drummond’s sister and the boys invited him to sing in their band, kicking out the old vocalist in the process. Later that same year Toby Anderson also joined the group as keyboardist and songwriter. A demo of a song called “Curiosity killed the cat” was heard by businessman Peter Rosengard who became their manager and they changed their name to that of the song. A debut gig was held at the Embassy Club in December 1984 at which point there were still numerous extra musicians and singers on stage. They shed the excess baggage although Anderson remained the ‘fifth’ Cat until late 1986.

Signed to Phonogram in 1985, they started recording towards the end of the year. Their album was held up for almost a year after original producers Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare were dropped in favour of Stewart Levine. ‘Misfit’ followed in July but flopped. Another face from the ’60s, Andy Warhol, met the band at a London art exhibition and he championed them, even appearing in a music video for ‘Misfit’. His involvement, though useful, was cut short when he died in 1987. Several television appearances helped to push the second single ‘Down to Earth’, which entered the charts in December 1986 reaching the Top 10 in the New Year.

A series of further hits followed, including a re-issued ‘Misfit’. However, after ‘Free’ in September 1987 they underwent a quiet period, although they did appear in the music video for Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree alongside Kim Wilde and Mel Smith.

The band returned in 1989 as Curiosity with the single ‘Name And Number’. The 1992 single ‘Hang on in There Baby’ was their last big moment, reaching number 3 in the chart.

In November 2001, Ben Volpiere-Pierrot from Curiosity Killed the Cat appeared with Kim Wilde in the Here & Now Tour. This was repeated in December 2003 in the Here & Now Greatest Hits Tour.
