In this Polish talent show, eight celebrities portray various iconic singers each week to win 10,000 PLN for their chosen charity. In this episode, actress Adriana Kalska performs Kim Wilde’s ‘You Came’, while also looking a bit like her.

You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

Song written by Pete Burns, Steve Coy, Wayne Hussey, Tim Lever and Mike Percy and originally recorded by their band Dead or Alive.

Dead or Alive version

Pete Burns admitted in his autobiography that two songs were the inspiration for ‘You Spin Me Round’: ‘I Wanted Your Love’ by Luther Vandross and ‘See You ’round Like a Record’ by Little Nell. During the recording of the song, producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman took on a confrontational attitude, which was met by an equally confrontational attitude from the band. The record company was unenthusiastic about the song, so Burns took out a £2,500 loan to record it. After its original release on 5 November 1984, the single topped the UK singles chart, as well as reaching top 10 almost worldwide.

Kim Wilde version

‘You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)’ was performed live during the Dutch tours in October 2016 and October 2017, the tour with Howard Jones in Australia in 2017 and the Wilde Wild Xmas Show in December 2017.

Lyrics

If I, I get to know your name
Well if I, could trace your private number, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
I want some, want some

I got my sights on you (and no one else will do)
And I, I need to get you just a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re having fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I I wanna be your friend
And I I want to get you just a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out, here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I want your love
I need your love

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out, watch out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I want your love
I need your love

You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
Right round right round

Lyrics

Set me free why don’t cha babe
Get out of my life why don’t cha babe
’cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hangin’on

Set me free why don’t cha babe
Get out of my life why don’t cha babe
You don’t really need me
But you keep me hangin’on

Why do you keep a comin’ around
Playing with my heart
Why don’t cha get out of my life
And let me make a brand new start
Let me get over you
The way you’ve gotten over me yeah

You say although we broke up
You still just wanna be friends
But how can we still be friends
When seeing you only breaks my heart again

Get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night
‘Cos you don’t really love me
You just keep me hangin’on

You say you still care for me
But your heart and soul needs to be free
And now that you’ve got your freedom
You wanna still hold on to me
You don’t want me for yourself
So let me find somebody else

Why don’t cha be a man about it and set me free
Now you don’t care a thing about me
You’re just using me – Hey, abusing me
Get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night
‘Cos you don’t really love me
You just keep me hangin’on
You don’t really need me
You just keep me – hangin’on

Wonderful World

Song written by Sam Cooke, Lou Adler and Herb Alpert. The song was first attributed to the pseudonym “Barbara Campbell” who was Sam Cooke’s high school sweetheart. It was first recorded by Cooke in 1959 for his 1960 album, ‘The wonderful world of Sam Cooke’. It was also recorded by Herman’s Hermits and had a hit with it in 1965.

Kim performed this track live with Midge Ure and his band at the Rock-a-Baby concert in 1991, and again with guitarist Benny Smith on 27 September 2019.

Lyrics

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much about biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I took
What I do know is I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world it would be

I don’t know much about the middle ages
If there’s a fiction then I’m turning the pages
Don’t know much about the rise and fall
I don’t know much about nothing at all
But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Now I don’t claim to be an A-student
But I’m trying to be
I think that maybe by being an A-student, baby
I’ll win your love for me

I don’t know much about the middle ages
If there’s a fiction then I’m turning the pages
Don’t know much about the rise and fall
I don’t know much about nothing at all
But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be
What a wonderful world this would be
What a wonderful world this would be

Wonderful Life

Song written by Colin Vearncombe and originally recorded by Black.

Black version

Colin Vearncombe wrote ‘Wonderful Life’ in 1985, at a time his life was in a downward spiral. His marriage had broken down, he’d lost his recording contract with a major label (WEA) after just two singles, he suffered a car crash and he was on the verge of becoming homeless. The title was meant to be ironic, and while the song was in minor key, this wasn’t picked up by everyone at first. The single was released in 1986 by the small label Ugly Man Records in 1986 and managed to reach number 72 in the UK singles chart. Signed by A&M Records soon after, the song was included on his debut album ‘Wonderful life’ and released as the second single from that album, after the first single ‘Sweetest smile’ had been reasonably successful in the summer of 1987. This time, ‘Wonderful life’ became a top 10 hit not only in the UK but also in most of Europe, and even in Japan. Worldwide sales were over a million. It was to be a career-defining single for Black, since subsequent singles and albums weren’t as successful.

Black – which slimmed down in subsequent years to a one man band featuring Colin Vearncombe – re-recorded the track several times, although these versions were not released as a single. The A&M recording was re-released once in 1994 when the track was used for Standard Life insurance TV ads.

The song was covered by many artists, including Ace of Base, Tina Cousins, Lara Fabian, Tony Hadley, German rock band Hyperchild, Dutch singer Mathilde Santing and Zucchero.

Kim Wilde version

Kim Wilde recorded a cover of ‘Wonderful Life’ for her 2011 album Snapshots.

Versions

There are two versions of ‘Wonderful Life’: the album version and the ‘mixed but not mastered’ version from the promotional CD of ‘Snapshots’.

Live performances

‘Wonderful Life’ was performed live during the Snapshots & Greatest Hits Tour in 2012 and the tour with Nik Kershaw in Australia in 2013. During live performances, a small part of the song ‘Wonderful Life’ by Hurts was incorporated into the song.

Kim about ‘Wonderful Life’

1987 was a really important year for me. I did a cover version of ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’ with my brother Ricky and it went to number 1 in America. This was just an astonishing moment in my life, but I remember amongst all the pop music that was around at the time – Madonna was churning them out, and Michael Jackson, I mean it was just… Rick Astley, they were all at it. They were all putting out this fantastic pop music – but somehow this really subtle song managed to do really really well in the charts and it was called ‘Wonderful Life’ by Black, and I absolutely loved the song and I remember travelling to the airport to go and do some promotion in Europe and hearing about the news of ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’ going to number 1, and hearing this song on the radio and thinking, ‘yeah, everything really is very wonderful right now, and so it was sort of like a soundtrack to that period of time for me. Because it really was wonderful at the time. (1)

Lyrics

Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air

Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There’s magic everywhere

Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life

The sun’s in your eyes
The heat is in your hear
They seem to hate you
Because you’re there

And I need a friend
Oh I need a friend to make me happy
Not stand here on my own

Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life

I need a friend
Oh I need a friend
To make me happy
Not so alone

Look at me here
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful wonderful life
Wonderful life

White Christmas

Song written by Irving Berlin. Accounts vary as to when and where Berlin wrote the song. One story is that he wrote it in 1940, in warm La Quinta, California, while staying at the La Quinta Hotel, a frequent Hollywood retreat also favored by writer-director-producer Frank Capra, although the Arizona Biltmore also claims the song was written there.

Bing Crosby version

The first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941. He subsequently recorded the song with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers for Decca Records in just 18 minutes on 29 May 1942, and it was released on July 30 as part of an album of six 78-rpm songs from the film Holiday Inn. The song initially performed poorly and was overshadowed by Holiday Inn’s first hit song: “Be Careful, It’s My Heart”. By the end of October 1942, “White Christmas” topped the  chart. It remained in that position until well into the new year.

Re-released by Decca, the single returned to the #1 spot during the holiday seasons of 1945 and 1946 (on the chart dated 4 January 1947), thus becoming the only single with three separate runs at the top of the U.S. charts. The recording became a chart perennial, reappearing annually on the pop chart twenty separate times before Billboard magazine created a distinct Christmas chart for seasonal releases.

The version most often heard today is not the original 1942 Crosby recording, as the master had become damaged due to frequent use. Crosby re-recorded the track on 18 March 1947, accompanied again by the Trotter Orchestra and the Darby Singers, with every effort made to reproduce the original recording session. There are subtle differences in the orchestration, most notably the addition of a celesta and flutes to brighten up the introduction. Crosby dismissed his role in the song’s success, saying later that “a jackdaw with a cleft palate could have sung it successfully.” But Crosby was associated with it for the rest of his career.

Other versions

“White Christmas” is the most-recorded Christmas song; there have been more than 500 recorded versions of the song, in several different languages. Famous versions were recorded by Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, The Drifters, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, The Supremes, Barbra Streisand, John Denver, Boney M., Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Chicago, Crash Test Dummies, Westlife, Michael Buble and Erasure.

Kim Wilde version

Kim Wilde performed the song during her Christmas concerts at Knebworth House in December 2014 and December 2015, and again as an encore on 15 December 2022 during a Christmas concert in London, joined by Tom Aspaul.

Lyrics

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the tree tops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the tree tops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

When the Boy’s Happy (The Girl’s Happy Too)

Song originally performed by the Chiffons. Released in 1963 as a single, using the name The Four Pennies, it reached number 95 in the US singles chart.

Kim performed this song live during the Debut Tour in 1982.

Lyrics

Every day I kiss my baby
Just because it drives him crazy
And I would do most anything to make him feel just like I feel
‘cos when the boy’s happy the girl’s happy too

I say I love him when I hold him
Heaven knows how much I’ve told him
I always dream of him tenderly
Because he means the world to me
‘cos when the boy’s happy the girl’s happy too

I know how to break him up
I know how to make him care
I know how to shake him up
I just run my fingers through his hair

I could never live without him
That is why I worry about him
He comes to me ‘cos he know that I’ll
do all the things that make him smile
‘cos when the boy’s happy the girl’s happy too
When the boy’s happy the girl’s happy too
When the boy’s happy the girl’s happy too

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

Lyrics

Ever wonder about what he’s doing
How it all turned to lies
Sometimes I think? that it’s better to never ask why

Where there is desire
There’s gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try

Funny how the heart can be deceiving
More than just a couple times
Why do we fall in love so easy
Even when it’s not right

Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try

Ever worried that it might be ruined
And does it make you wanna cry?
When you’re out there doing what you’re doing
Are you just getting by?
Tell me are you just getting by by by

Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try

You gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try

Tracks of My Tears

Song written by Smokey Robinson, Warren Moore and Marv Tarplin. It was originally performed by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles in 1965.

Kim performed this track live with Midge Ure and his band at the Rock-a-Baby concert in 1991, and again with guitarist Benny Smith on 27 September 2019.

Lyrics

People say I’m the life of the party
‘Cause I tell a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Deep inside I’m blue

So take a good look at my face
You’ll see my smile looks out of place
Just look closer, it’s easy to trace
The tracks of my tears
I need you, need you

Since you left me if you see me with another girl
Seeming like I’m having fun
Although she may be cute she’s just a substitute
‘Cause you’re the permanent one

So take a good look at my face
You’ll see my smile looks out of place
Just look closer, it’s easy to trace
The tracks of my tears

(Outside) I’m masquerading
(Inside) my hope is fading
(Just a clown) ooh yeah since you put me down
My smile is my make-up I wear since my break-up with you

So take a good look at my face
You’ll see my smile looks out of place
Just look closer, it’s easy to trace
The tracks of my tears

Together Forever

Song written by Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Originally performed by Rick Astley on his debut album ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’, released in 1987. Kim Wilde sang part of this song in the Danish music programme Musikbutikken on 3 November 2001, when she was interviewed together with Rick. He returned the favour by singing part of Kids in America.

Lyrics

If there’s anything you need
All you have to do is say
You knew you satisfy everything in me
We shouldn’t waste a single day
So don’t stop me falling
It’s destiny calling
A power I just can’t deny
It’s never changing
Can’t you hear me, I’m saying
I want you for the rest of my life

Together forever and never to part
Together forever we two
And don’t you know
I would move heaven and earth
To be together forever with you

If they ever get you down
There’s always something I can do
Because I wouldn’t ever wanna see you frown
I’ll always do what’s best for you
There ain’t no mistaking
It’s true love we’re making
Something to last for all time
It’s never changing
Can’t you hear me, I’m saying
I want you for the rest of my life

Together forever and never to part
Together forever we two
And don’t you know
I would move heaven and earth
To be together forever with you

So don’t stop me falling
It’s destiny calling
A power I just can’t deny
It’s never changing
Can’t you hear me, I’m saying
I want you for the rest of my life

Together forever and never to part
Together forever we two
And don’t you know
I would move heaven and earth
To be together forever with you
