Everything We Know

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde. Third track of the album Kim Wilde.

Live performances

‘Everything We Know’ was performed live during the Debut Tour in 1982 only.

Marty about ‘Everything We Know’

This was written while we were up in a hotel in Scotland. Rick had a reggae chord sequence and melody and it sounded great, so everything fitted in pretty quickly, Rick also came up with the title. The kind of song we wanted to make is…. If you were on a beach somewhere nice on holiday and heard the track while you were drinking something or other and watching the sun go down… well, it was that sort of feeling. A kind of lazy reggae summer song. (1)

Lyrics

Don’t bring your gun ’round here
Don’t need you mouthing off your fear
It touches all you can build a wall
We all have tasted tears

Everything we know
Everything we know
Everything we know
Everywhere we go

We walked along the beach
Once lovers now we’re out of reach
Windy skies, they kissed me goodbye
It takes experience to teach

Everything we know
Everything we know
Everything we know
Everywhere we go

Nobody laughed today
I went to watch the children play
Their smiles and mine were frozen in time
I’ll just remember them that way

Everything we know
Everything we know
Everything we know
Everywhere we go

Everyone’s Sweetheart

Song written by Kim Wilde and Steve Byrd. This track was never officially released, but a demo version did see the light of day when it was offered on the website KimWildeTV.com for a couple of weeks in 2004.
Muriel Dacq recorded the song later with French lyrics as Ces Moments Là.

Lyrics

Everyone knows her but nobody’s there
when she really needs a shoulder
there’s no-one to care
she’s everyone’s sweetheart
but she hasn’t got a man to love

She waits in the morning her hair’s in a mess
Can’t be bothered to put make-up on
she couldn’t care less
She’s everyone’s sweetheart
but she hasn’t got a man to love

Maybe she will just pretend
Someone to long for her kiss
And love her until then it’s…

What’s on the TV there’s nothing to do
Well she’s tired of making dinner for one, never two
She’s everyone’s sweetheart
but she hasn’t got a man
She’s everyone’s sweetheart
but she hasn’t got a man to love

Every Woman Knows

Song by Lulu, released as a single on 14 November 1994.
The music video for this single features guest appearances by Kim Appleby, Boy George, Jennifer Saunders, Heather Small and Kim Wilde. They do not sing on the track.

Lyrics

Deep in the night
She sits alone
Still hears only lies
Talked down the phone

Haven’t you learned baby
You can’t fool that girl
All the chairs you’ve been spinning boy
are older than the world

Oh Every woman knows
Whenever she’s been lied to
Oh every woman knows
But who’s she gonna cry to

This time around
could be your last
‘cos you’re repeating patterns
just like in the past

How many chances baby
is she gonna give
Though she tries she can’t forget
Heaven knows she can’t forgive

Oh Every woman knows
Whenever she’s been lied to
Oh every woman knows
But who’s she gonna cry to
Oh Every woman knows
When her man’s been cheating
Oh every woman knows
With the company you’re keeping
you’re not what she’s needing

There’s no denying baby
You’ve been lying lately
Now he’s crying baby
so cry boy, cry boy

Oh every woman knows
Oh every woman knows
She’s got intuition
Oh every woman knows
When her man’s been cheating
Oh every woman knows
You’re not what she’s needing
Why can’t you believe it
Oh every woman knows

Martyn Ware about ‘Every Time I See You I Go Wild’

‘Every Time I See You I Go Wild’ is an arrangement masterpiece created entirely on Roland System 100 by my collaborator Brian Duffy from Modfied Toy Orchestra, featuring a stunning reinterpretation by Kim Wilde – kind of music noir. (1)

Ah… Kim Wilde. What a beautiful woman. Always had a bit of a crush on her, to be honest. From the point of view of the music on this, I became obsessed with quite a few Northern Soul of that particular time, always loved soul anyway. I love the idea of taking Northern Soul flavoured tracks and slowing them down and forcing a reinterpretation of the lyrics and in this particular instance we decided to make this quite ‘noir’. I asked a friend of mine… ‘Electro noir’ is better I think… I asked a friend of mine Brian Duffy, who’d just bought a Roland System 100, which is one of the first synths we ever owned as the Human League, and was responsible for things like ‘Being boiled’, I asked him if he’d be interested in doing an arrangement of this track, since it was a new toy for him. What he came back with was about a 100 different monophonic tracks, almost symphonically arranged, which blew me away completely. The sounds are absolutely beautiful on this track and I have nothing but respect and admiration for the job he did on this. So all the credit really goes to him, apart from the mix of course and the vocals. Kim’s vocals on this are staggeringly brilliant. I honestly believe it could well be her best ever performance. And several people have mentioned this to me that they believe this is the case as well. (2)

Kim about ‘Every Time I See You I Go Wild’

Now at last I get to work on a B.E.F. project, how fantastic! The Stevie Wonder track Martyn sent was unknown to me, but I’ve always been a huge Stevie fan, both Martyn and I are really excited with the result of ‘I go wild’. A fantastic night at the Roundhouse in Camden last year showcased the new B.E.F. project ‘Dark’ for the first time, with an array of wonderful artistes coming together under one vision. I am so proud to be part of the continuing B.E.F. story. (1)

Lyrics

Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild
Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild

everytime I see your face I feel an earthquake coming on
Ooh you shake me up and you break me down ’til all my self-control is gone
you’re all the things I’ve ever wanted
Ooh, underneath the rising sun
Baby just one look at you, my heart cries for you
‘cos I love you, love you (love you, love you)

Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild
Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild

You’ve got sweet magic in your eyes and it makes you the master of my soul
Ooh Just one look and all my strength is gone, taken away under your control
Baby when you pass me by
Ooh all I do is break down and cry
Baby just one look at you, my heart cries for you
‘cos I love you, love you (love you, love you)

Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild
Everytime I see you, baby I go wild, so wild

Yeah

I go wild, I go wild, I go wild (so wild)
Ooh baby I go wild, I go wild, ooh, I go wild
Every time I see you baby
Every time I see you
Every time I see you baby (go wild)
I go wild (go wild)
Ooh I go wild (go wild)
Yeah

Kim about ‘Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldnt’ve)’

In 1978 it was a really interesting time, to say the least, in the UK for pop music. Punk rock was riding high, the Sex Pistols were causing all kinds of mayhem and upsetting all the grownups and I wasn’t much of a rebel myself, but I loved that they were, that they were causing so much upset and being so rude. It was such fun. And great to hear rock and roll music being played with such attitude and the Buzzcocks were a band that seemed a little bit friendlier than the others. Pete Shelley always had a very nice smile about his face and never seemed quite so angry. He wrote this song called ‘Ever fallen in love’ and I remember I really loved it at the time. It’s a really exciting time in retrospect. Bands like the Clash, I remember seeing them quite a few times. The punk scene was really exciting and led obviously to the new wave movement and influenced all kinds of music after that, not least of all us. I think Kids in America really was very influenced by that sort of post-punk attitude, but also new wave, pop. So the Buzzcocks were part of that mix and our mix. So it’s great to sing their song. Lyrics

You stir my natural emotions
You make me feel I’m dirt
And I’m hurt
And if I start a commotion
I run the risk of losing you
And that’s worse

Ever fallen in love with someone?
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

I can’t see much of a future
Unless we find out what’s to blame
What a shame
And we won’t be together much longer
Unless we realize that we are the same

Ever fallen in love with someone?
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

You disturb my natural emotions
You make me feel I’m dirt
And I’m hurt
And if I start a commotion
I’ll only end up losing you
And that’s worse

Ever fallen in love with someone?
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

Ever fallen in love with someone?
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

Fallen in love with
Ever fallen in love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with

Evans, Chris

Born in Warrington, England (UK) on 1 April 1966. British presenter of TV and radio programmes. Evans started his broadcasting career at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. He went on to work at the BBC London radio station GLR presenting Round at Chris’s every Saturday morning and also presented a Monday to Thursday evening show broadcast from 7.30 to 10pm.

In 1990, his weekday evening show ended, but he continued with his Saturday morning show and in addition to that, in early 1992, began presenting a Sunday afternoon show on BBC Radio 1, replacing Phillip Schofield who had previously broadcast in the slot. His move to Radio 1 was shortlived but seen as a huge success. His departure from Radio 1 was in part so he could devote present a new Channel 4 breakfast programme The Big Breakfast in late 1992. Evans, along with co-host Gaby Roslin, was an unqualified success in the slot, which brought him national celebrity and considerable acclaim.
Kim met Chris Evans when she was asked to present The Big Breakfast in November 1993, filling in for Roslin. This led to a six week relationship.
Since then, Chris has had a successful career as a radio presenter. He married former pop star Billie Piper in Las Vegas in May 2001. In September 2004 news stories circulated regarding a trial separation. In spring 2005 it was confirmed that Evans and Piper would divorce. Evans has a daughter, Jade (born 1986) from a previous relationship.

After a difficult time in his professional life – losing a lawsuit against Virgin radio after repeatedly failing to arrive at work – Evans joined Radio 2 on a permanent basis in September 2005, to present a weekly Saturday afternoon show from 2pm-5pm. The show was well received by listeners and critics, and Evans was announced as the successor to Radio 2’s Drivetime show to succeed long-time host Johnnie Walker, beginning on April 18, 2006.His arrival caused the show to lose listeners at first, but increasing in later months.

Evans took over Radio 2’s Breakfast show on 11 January 2010, after Terry Wogan retired. Kim appeared in this show on November 8, 2013, singing four songs, two of them together with another guest on this show, Cliff Richard. She appeared on the show again on July 27, 2018 for an interview after the release of the single Birthday.

Kim about Chris Evans

What I really like about Chris is that he’s down-to-earth. But our relationship became very public. I’ve never been comfortable with the public side of my life and being with Chris made it worse. Chris and I are quite alike in that we’re very private people. He is quite shy and doesn’t like going into a roomful of people and I’m the same. It’s okay when you’re in front of a camera but with Chris there was a certain craziness about the whole thing which I didn’t like. And I was working a lot, too. I’m not a great girlfriend – I’m very independent and don’t like having my wings clipped. Anyone would have to take all that on if they stayed with me. (1)

It was an intense relationship and had a profound effect on both of us. Actually, it was made out to be rather trite (by the press – MR), suggesting six weeks is nothing when six weeks can be a lifetime sometimes. But that’s okay, we know what it was all about.
So, if it was so intense, why didn’t it last?
Well, I can’t go into that. All I know is that sometimes two people meet and have a profound effect on each other, and it can be years before they understand why. The world works in very mysterious, very wonderful ways. Through meeting him lots of things changed for me – a lot of attitudes to myself, about my work and a whole number of things. Meeting him has been great, it’s been great to have him in my life, and I don’t regret it at all. I’ll have a lot of respect and time for him always. (2)

Is it true that some of the stories about women in the tabloids were actually stunts got up to publicise the Big Breakfast?
Chris Evans: You mean Kim? Kim and I went out properly together and we had a lovely time and it was not a publicity stunt. I think it’s unfortunate that they get reported at all, so why would I do it as a publicity stunt? It’s a bind because, you know, me and Kim, it might have been all right if we’d been left alone. European Soul

Song written by Ricky and Kim Wilde. Eighth track of the album Close.

Versions

There are two versions of this song: the album version and an acoustic version. The latter appears as an extra track on the CD-single for Perfect Girl, released in 2006.

Live performances

‘European soul’ was performed live during a German tour in December 1992, the Hits Tour in 1994 and during live concerts in 2015 and 2016.

Kim about ‘European soul’

That song is about the painter Marc Chagall, of whom I’m a big fan. I have locked myself into the studio for a few months for the recording of this album. I also read a lot of books about artists, such as Chagall. I knew something of him, since I had art history in art college, but I never studied his work properly. I was more into Degas and Toulouse Lautrec then. When I saw Chagall’s work I went to the Tate Gallery to see his paintings. I am touched by his use of colours and his compositions. The feeling of happiness is consistent with the song. (1)

A song which I’m most proud of lyric-wise is about the French painter Marc Chagall. I was in art college and know a lot about painting. Recently I read a book about Marc Chagall’s life. When I was flicking through it my mouth fell open, seeing all that beautiful stuff. I went to Tate Gallery (art museum in London -ed.) immediately and stood before one of his beautiful paintings for a while. Then I remembered suddenly that someone once asked me what I felt was closest to perfection. I suddenly knew the answer when I was there in the museum. I’m sad that Marc Chagall doesn’t live anymore. I would have loved to play my song to him… (2)

I love painting, that makes my life beautiful. The French painter Chagall (one of the most influential painters of this century) has been an obsession of mine for a while. He inspires me in my songwriting. Unfortunately I will never reach Chagall’s level of artistry in my lyrics. But they are straight from my heart. (3)

Hands down one of my all time KW favorite songs. I remember writing the lyrics as I recovered from a broken collarbone acquired at a rather hilarious party in Dorset! Inspired by the exquisite paintings of Chagall, whose work I have always loved, we tried to capture some of the magic of his art that still beguiles me today. (4)

Lyrics

I want to tell you of a place that I recall
Where you’re drawn by the seduction
And the beauty of it all
You can step into another world
Of poetry and dreams
In a land of mystery
Images dance, translucent colours seem to shine
They’re a ghostly recollection
Of another space and time
I imagine I can hear their voices calling me
To the land of mystery

Where the Russian heart is strong
Like the beating of a drum
Where the magic lingers on
And the fight for thruth is won
Deep in the European soul

And love’s eternal flame was burning deep inside
It was the purest inspiration
That he never tried to hide
When you see the lovers floating
You can almost hear them sigh
As you watch them dancing
Up into the sky

The world’s realities are not to be denied
But must we keep destroying all our fantasies
It’s hard to look beyond when terror fills our eyes
We mustn’t give up trying to let our dreams survive

I touch the paintings with the fingers of my heart
Like a supernatural love affair that’s just about to start
But there’ll always be the hidden dreams I’ll never see
In the land of mystery

Estus, Deon

Born as Jeffery Deon Estus in Detroit in 1956 and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1974. He sang second tenor in the choir at Northwestern under the direction of Brazel Dennard. His bass (guitar) teacher was the late James Jamerson of Motown’s The Funk Brothers.

Estus joined the R&B band Brainstorm as a teenager, recording two albums with them and scoring a hit with “Popcorn.” During the early 1980s, he appeared as a session bassist on several mainstream albums, including Marvin Gaye’s 1982 comeback album, Midnight Love. After his bass talents were recognized, he was invited to join the UK pop group, Wham!. He went on to tour China with Wham! and later backed Wham! frontman George Michael on his Faith tour. He also participated in the late-1980s collective, Boogie Box High, which was spearheaded by George Michael’s cousin, Andros Georgiou, and featured Michael along with other high-profile musicians; Estus appears on the group’s only album, Outrageous, released in 1989. Estus later performed with George Michael at Rock in Rio and has continued to play bass as part of Michael’s backing band.

In 1989, Estus released a solo album entitled Spell, produced by Colin Campsie & George McFarlane, with several tracks produced by George Michael. The album’s biggest hit was the single ‘Heaven Help Me’, for which George Michael supplied backing vocals. It reached number 41 in the UK singles chart and number 5 in the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

In 1990, Deon Estus appeared on Kim Wilde’s album Love Moves, playing bass on I Can’t Say Goodbye.

Lyrics

Say your prayers little one
Don’t forget, my son
To include everyone

Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Till the sandman he comes

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light, enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land

Something’s wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren’t of snow white

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon’s fire
And of things that will bite

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light, enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land

Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
Pray the lord my soul to take

Hush little baby, don’t say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It’s just the beast under your bed,
In your closet, in your head

Exit light, enter night
Grain of sand
Exit light, enter night
Take my hand
We’re off to never never land

Enjoy the Silence

One of the biggest hits by Depeche Mode, released in 1990 from the album ‘Violator’.
Written by Martin L. Gore, this song was originally intended to be a ballad. The demo was recorded with a harmonium and Martin singing. Fellow band member Alan Wilder saw hit potential in the song and composed an upbeat tempo and structure for the song. Released as the second single from ‘Violator’, it was the biggest hit for Depeche Mode since 1984’s ‘People are people’ in the UK, peaking at number 6. In the USA, the song made the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100, to date the only track to do so.
In 2004, a remix version was released to coincide with the release of ‘Remixes 81-04’, a compilation of Depeche Mode remixes.
Also, various cover versions have been released since then, by artists such as Tori Amos, Apoptygma Berzerk, Keane, Lacuna Coil and many others.

Kim Wilde version

Kim Wilde only performed the song live, but one of the performances was released on the CD-single Baby Obey Me in August 2007. This live version was recorded on 21 February 2007 at Ancienne Belgique, Brussels (Belgium).

Live performances

Kim performed ‘Enjoy the silence’ during the Perfect Girl tour, live concerts in 2008 and 2009 and during the Snapshots & Greatest Hits tour in 2012.

Lyrics

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world

Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Cant you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial

Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Enjoy the silence
