Fix the fells

On 1 July 2004, Kim Wilde and Ian Botham launch the project ‘Fix the Fells’. It is a vital part of a much larger project known as the Upland Path Landscape Restoration Project. This 10 year project started in 2002. The Heritage Lottery Fund is providing up to two thirds of the funding for the first five years.

The natural erosion caused by wind, ice and water is extremely slow. When you introduce feet the process speeds up rapidly and spoils the look of the landscape. It also makes paths unpleasant to walk on. The Lake District National Park Authority has identified 145 paths which have become eroded, mainly by the Lake District weather and 28 million feet walking in the area each year. To repair the majority of the footpath erosion in the English Lake District National Park, The Lake District National Park Authority, The National Trust and English Nature worked together to produce a management plan. With help from The Lake District Tourism and Conservation Partnership and Friends of the Lake District, they are committed to raising the funds necessary to pay for fell path repairs.

Flora Aerobathon 94

On 24 April 1994, the Flora Aerobathon was due to take place in various venues in the UK, such as the SECC in Glasgow and Earl’s Court in London. The event was to be the biggest indoor event in Britain, with 140,000 people jumping up and down to a dance beat in order to raise money for charity. Kim was one of the celebrity names, along with 2 Unlimited, Boy George, East 17, Gary Glitter and Lulu.

Unfortunately, only 17,000 people participated in the end and the organisation didn’t raise enough money to even pay for the event itself…

Fletcher, Guy

Born 25 May 1960 in Maidstone, Kent (UK), Guy Fletcher was born into a musical family and is the namesake of his uncle, Guy Fletcher, who wrote several hit songs for other artists with composing partner Doug Flett. Whilst learning a trade as an audio engineer at DJM Studios in London at the age of 15, Fletcher also had a succession of his own bands and learned to play keyboards, guitars and other stringed instruments. He joined and toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in 1979 and in 1981, Roxy Music for their ‘Avalon’ world tour. In 1983, Fletcher was recruited by Dire Straits’ lead guitarist Mark Knopfler to work on the music for the films ‘Cal’ and ‘Comfort and Joy’. He joined Dire Straits in 1984, a year before their most successful album, ‘Brothers in Arms’, which put the band in a globally acclaimed spotlight.

In 1986, Fletcher co-produced Belouis Some’s self-titled album with Gary Langan. He also played keyboards on the track Brothers for Kim Wilde.

After Dire Straits disbanded, Fletcher continued to be associated with almost every single piece of work concerning Mark Knopfler’s solo career, the band’s former lead singer and guitarist. Between July and August, 2005, Fletcher completed a world tour with Mark Knopfler, promoting Knopfler’s latest solo album, ‘Shangri-La’.

Fletcher’s first solo album, ‘Inamorata’, was released in January 2008. It was followed by the albums ‘Stone’ (2009) and ‘Natural Selection’ (2010). His most recent album ‘High Roads’ was released in 2016.

Fletcher is a multi-instrumentalist, playing keyboard and several string instruments, including guitars. Also record producer and engineer. Owner of the studio A-Bay.

Lyrics

Kim: I love Winter round the tree
Spending time with family
Joy and children spreading laughter,
Peace at Christmas forever after..

Pete: Wreck the halls with rows of folly,
Hate the season for the jolly,
Warm and cosy full of mulled,
Deep and crisp and even,
Reason for the season culled!

Kim: The bells are ringing
A Christmas chyme

Pete: It does my brain in
Every bloody time..

Kim: I love Kristmas
Pete: F U Kristmas
Both: Here comes Christmas time!

Pete: I love the quiet
I love the peace
Will this torture never cease
I hate scenes resplendent with snow,
Won’t you simply let it go

Kim: Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Tis the season to be jolly,
Warm and cosy full of mulled,
Deep and crisp and even,
Reason for the season culled!

The bells are ringing
A Christmas chyme
It does his brain in
Pete: Every bloody time..

Kim: I love Kristmas
Pete: F U Kristmas
Both: Here comes Christmas time!

Lyrics

You need to know that we’re through
Think we’re long overdue now baby
Gotta open your eyes and realize that
I won’t be the one who will cry
So I’m telling you bye bye baby
I turn around and walk away from all your lies

Even now you know just how to play your games with my mind…

Why did you have to do me like that
I know that it’s wrong but still I always come back
You haven’t the right to say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find a way to fight temptation
How do you control me like that
I gotta move on there’s no escaping that fact
I’m not gonna let you say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find another way to fight temptation

True, there was a time when we were cool
But you took me for granted baby
And it opened up my eyes to realize that
I was with the wrong kind of guy
Now I’m telling you bye bye baby
Nothing you can say or do for me and you

Even now you know just how to play your games with my mind…

Why did you have to do me like that
I know that it’s wrong but still I always come back
You haven’t the right to say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find a way to fight temptation
How do you control me like that
I gotta move on there’s no escaping that fact
I’m not gonna let you say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find another way to fight temptation

Even now you know just how to play your games with my mind…

Why did you have to do me like that
I know that it’s wrong but still I always come back
You haven’t the right to say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find a way to fight temptation
How do you control me like that
I gotta move on there’s no escaping that fact
I’m not gonna let you say there isn’t any other way
I gotta find another way to fight temptation

Fever

Song written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell, who used the pseudonym John Davenport. It was originally recorded by American R&B singer Little Willie John for his debut album ‘Fever’ (1956), and released as a single in April of the same year. It has been covered by numerous artists from various musical genres, most notably by Peggy Lee whose rendition became the most widely known version of ‘Fever’ and the singer’s signature song. Lee’s version contained rewritten lyrics different from the original and an altered music arrangement. It became a top-five hit on the music charts in the UK and Australia in addition to entering the top ten in the US and the Netherlands. ‘Fever’ was nominated in three categories at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards in 1959, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Other notable cover versions of “Fever” include those by Elvis Presley, Madonna, The McCoys, La Lupe and Beyoncé. Madonna released it as a single from her fifth studio album ‘Erotica’ (1992) in March 1993. She promoted “Fever” by filming and releasing a music video directed by Stéphane Sednaoui and performing the song on several television shows as well as her 1993 The Girlie Show World Tour.

Live performances

Kim Wilde performed the first verse of ‘Fever’ during her Another Step tour in 1986, most notably in a concert that was televised on BBC television on New Years Eve 1986, before singing her own song Love Blonde.

Lyrics

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that’s so hard to bear
You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
