Lyrics

Pink dress, baggy pants
Get those t-shirts from my closet
Take this off and put that on
What’s that necklace doing in my pocket?
I’m taking my time
to look refined
My rosey dress could be a party winner
Should I try the yellow skirt?
That fits to my golden slippers

I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up
for the time of my life tonight –
but I’ve got so many clothes that I want to try
Well, do I look too flash?
Do the colours clash?
Mirror tell me I’m on top – when I’m dressed up
I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up

Summer socks in coloured boxes
One left glove and now the right one’s missing
There’s my crown to show my flowered locks
I’ll tie them up into a nice blue ribbon
So much style, what a pile!
There must be something in my old foot-locker
Long green boots or purple shoes
lilac blouse and my knickerbockers
I’m all dressed up

I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up
for the time of my life tonight –
but I’ve got so many clothes that I want to try
Well, do I look too flash?
Do the colours clash?
Mirror tell me I’m on top – when I’m dressed up
I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up
I’m all dressed up

I’ll Stand By You

Song written by Chrissie Hynde, Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.

Pretenders version

The song was recorded in 1994 by the Pretenders on their sixth studio album, ‘Last of the Independents’. The song is a ballad that pledges love and faithful assistance in times of personal darkness. It was released as a single in 1994 and reached number sixteen on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 in the UK chart.

Since its initial release, ‘I’ll Stand by You’ has also become a major hit for Girls Aloud in 2004 and Carrie Underwood in 2007, both times recorded as a charity single.

Kim Wilde version

In 2011, Kim recorded the track in the studio during sessions for the album Snapshots. The track was released as part of a download bundle on iTunes only.

Live performances

‘I’ll stand by you’ was performed live during Kim’s concerts in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Lyrics

Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Dont be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
cause Ive seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You dont know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you

So if youre mad, get mad
Dont hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well Im a lot like you
When youre standing at the crossroads
And dont know which path to choose
Let me come along
cause even if youre wrong

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you

And when…
When the night falls on you, baby
Youre feeling all alone
You wont be on your own

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you

I’ll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you

Lyrics

If I live a thousand years or more
You’ll still be the one I’m living for
And every night I whisper a prayer
That every day of my life you will always be there

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
About you baby…

If I only have one life to live
I will give you all I have to give
So don’t believe these are faithless times
Cause as long as I live, you will always be mine

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way I feel

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
About you baby…

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way I feel
About you baby

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel

Kim about ‘I want what I want’

Very strong melody and very cheeky text. I’m a fan of cheeky lyrics, it’s just so much fun to perform and always has been a hallmark of Kim Wilde. (1)

Lyrics

People tell their stories
Of what their life is not
Wasted years and broken dreams
They never gave a shot

I’m not gonna hold on while my life is flashing…
Parachute off this plane because it’s crashing

I want what I want not what I need
Getting what you get no it ain’t so bad
But I want what I want not what I need
I need to live it up I need to live it up now

Looking in the mirror
Tell me who do you see today
So conformed and broken
How did it get this way

Tell me have you said your goodbyes to freedom
Where are your dreams now you really need them

I want what I want not what I need
Getting what you get no it ain’t so bad
But I want what I want not what I need
I need to live it up I need to live it up now

I want what I want not what I need…

This could have been my story
This could have been my way
But no guts, no glory
It’s not a game I want to play

Tell me have you said your goodbyes to freedom
Where are your dreams now you really need them

I want what I want not what I need…

I want what I want not what I need…

I Touch Myself

Song written by Christina Amphlett, Mark McEntee, Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. Billy Steinberg had ‘I Touch Myself’ in his notebook; he had written the first verse and the chorus lyric. Christina Amphlett, singer from the band the Divinyls liked it immediately. The next day, McEntee (also from the band) and Amphlett got together with Kelly and Steinberg and wrote the rest. It was an unusual move, as Steinberg and Kelly rarely collaborated with others. Putting the song together took a lot of trial and error. It was recorded to two inch tape, making it difficult to edit. After significant experimentation they came up with an unusual structure with the bridge placed after the first chorus. The lyric is widely regarded as a paean to female masturbation.

The song was released by the Australian rock band Divinyls in December 1990 as the first single from their fifth album, ‘diVINYLS’. The single achieved great success, reaching the Top 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and reaching the number 1 position in their native country, Australia.

Live performances

Kim Wilde performed the song in November 2013 during her five concerts in Australia as a tribute to Amphlett, who had died in April 2013.

Lyrics

I love myself, I want you to love me
When I feel down, I want you above me
I search myself, I want you to find me
I forget myself, I want you to remind me

I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself
Ooh, I don’t want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

You’re the one who makes me come runnin’
You’re the sun who makes me shine
When you’re around, I’m always laughin’
I want to make you mine

I close my eyes and see you before me
Think I would die if you were to ignore me
A fool could see just how much I adore you
I’d get down on my knees, I’d do anything for you

I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself
Ooh, I don’t want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

I love myself, I want you to love me
When I feel down, I want you above me
I search myself, I want you to find me
I forget myself, I want you to remind me

I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself
Ooh, I don’t want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

I want you
I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ah ah ah ah oh ah

I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself
Ooh, I don’t want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself

I touch myself
I touch myself
I touch myself
I touch myself
I touch myself
I honestly do

I Love 1981

Second program in the BBC series ‘I love the 80’s’, televised in January 2001. The 1981 program focused on Kim’s debut year. It featured an item about Kim lasting for about seven minutes. The segment was filled with interviews and clips from a TV performance and the videos for Chequered Love, The Second Time and You Keep Me Hangin’ On. Interviews with Kim, Rick and Marty Wilde, Brian Grant (director of Kims early videos) and Mickie Most.

I Got You Babe

Song written by Sonny Bono. Performed live by Kim Wilde together with Ali Campbell from UB40 at ‘Stars of Europe’ on 24 March 2007; a concert organised for the 50th birthday of the European Union. They also performed the song together during a live concert by Ali Campbell at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 3 April 2008.

Sonny Bono, a songwriter and record producer for Phil Spector, wrote the song for himself and his wife, Cher. Bono was inspired to write the song to capitalize on the popularity of the term ‘babe’ at the time of writing.
‘I Got You Babe’ became Sonny & Cher’s biggest hit and one of the defining song of the early hippie movement. It became a number one hit in the USA and the UK.

The song has been frequently covered, most notably by UB40 with The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde in 1985, a UK number 1 and a USA top 20 hit.

Lyrics

As performed by Kim Wilde with Ali Campbell in 2007 and 2008.

Kim: they say were young and we dont know we wont find out until we grow
Ali: well I dont know if all thats true cause you got me, and baby I got you.
Babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Kim: they say our love wont pay the rent before its earned, our moneys all been spent
Ali: I guess thats so, we dont have a pot but at least Im sure of all the things we got

Ali: babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Ali: I got flowers in the spring I got you to wear my ring
Kim: and when Im sad, youre a clown and if I get scared, youre always around
Kim: so let them say your hairs too long cause I dont care, with you I cant go wrong
Ali: then put your little hand in mine there aint no hill or mountain we cant climb

Ali: babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Ali: I got you to hold my hand
Kim: I got you to understand
Ali: I got you to walk with me
Kim: I got you to talk with me
Ali: I got you to kiss goodnight
Kim: I got you to hold me tight

Lyrics

You’re like a rush, a killer crush
Straight to my brain
and when I’m down you come around
You numb the pain

Touching your skin is a head spin
I need another hit of you
Licking your lips is a wet trip
You’re everything I wanna do

I Everytime I close my eyes and think of you I fly, fly
I Everytime I know I’ll get a drink of you I fly, fly

You are my fix, the perfect mix
of right and wrong
You chill my spine below the line
Where you belong

I need my fill, where’s the next thrill
It’s right there in your fingertips
I just can’t talk, total shell shock
Baby when you flip my switch

I Everytime I close my eyes and think of you I fly, fly
I Everytime I know I’ll get a drink of you I fly, fly

High above the ground
I don’t wanna come down
I fly

You’re like a rush, a killer crush
Straight to my brain
and when I’m down you come around
You numb the pain

I Drove All Night

Song written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly for Roy Orbison. Orbison first recorded the song in 1987, but his rendition was not released until 1992.

Before that, Cyndi Lauper recorded the song for her third album, ‘A Night to Remember’ (1989). Lauper said she wanted to do it because she liked the idea “of a woman driving, of a woman in control.” Notable in her catalogue for the striking use of a lower vocal register, it has become one of Lauper’s most performed and well-known tracks.

The song has been covered by Pinmonkey (2002), Céline Dion (2003), and Becca (2008). John Waite recorded the song in 1986-87 while recording tracks for the CD Rovers Return but decided not to release it.

On 3 July 2008, Kim Wilde performed the song live on the occasion of a concert to open the Wilkinson American Movie Day in Brussels (Belgium). She performed the track as a duet with Belgian singer Born Crain.

Lyrics

I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

What in this world
Keeps us from tearing apart
No matter where I go I hear
the beating of our one heart
I think about you
when the night is cold and dark
No one can move me
the way that you do
Nothing erases the feeling between me and you

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Is that alright

I drove all night
I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

Kim about I Can’t Say Goodbye

I remember going in [at RAK studios], I remember seeing the orchestra in there and being in the control area. It was overwhelming. It was so overwhelming. I was so proud. It was one of those moments I have as a postcard in my head. I was seeing the strings happening on this song that had happened on a piano in my flat. So, yeah, it was one of the magic moments. (1)

Lyrics

I will be there when you call
I will be there

It’s so sad
when lovers part
They walk away and break their hearts
Yes I’ve had my share of tears
I walked away but now I’m here
Cos now that I can see
All the things that you’re doing to me

I can’t say goodbye
In the night I will be there
I will always stay around
In the day
I will be there when you call
When you call

I will be there when you call
I will be there
If you ever need me baby

I want you to understand
I need you now, I needed you then
Stupid things got in our way
But now I’m coming home to stay
Cos now that I can see
All the things that you’re doing to me

I can’t say goodbye
In the night I will be there
I will always stay around
In the day
I will be there when you call

Never gonna leave you
Now I’m gonna stay forever
Cos you know I need you
Never gonna leave you
Now I’m gonna stay forever

I can’t say goodbye
And you know I tried to walk away
But the feeling deep inside of my soul
Told me to stay
Cos I can’t say goodbye

I can’t say goodbye
In the night I will be there
I will always stay around
In the day
I will be there if you call
Cos I can’t say goodbye

I Believe My Own Eyes

Song written by Pete Townshend. Act 2, scene 4 of the musical Tommy contains this song, as well as Smash the Mirror and ‘I’m Free’.
Kim (as Mrs. Walker) is joined by Alistair Robbins (Mr. Walker) when she sings this song.
They also performed this song during the BBC program Pebble Mill on 2 February 1996, before the opening night of the musical.

Lyrics

Alistair:
This can’t continue
It makes no sense
we’re getting nowhere
I’ve lost all my confidence
The boy wants something
unsatisfied
He needs attention
and care our love can’t provide

And then, there’s the matter of us

I’d like to prove
that I don’t think you’ve seen the best of me
I’ve stood up for the boy
and I’ve clung to the hopes and the lies

I wished that the pain in your gaze
could again be a test of me
but when I look in the mirror
I believe my own eyes

I believe my own eyes
Now I’ve come to the end
All my patience is gone
When I’m doubtful I tend
to believe my own eyes

Kim:
I’d like to declare
This devotion and care is a life to live
That nothing has changed
and the time isn’t passing us by
But I have to say here
that for us there is a clear-cut alternative
When we look at eachother
We believe our own eyes

Both:
I believe my own eyes
Now I’ve come to the end
All my patience is gone
When I’m doubtful I tend
To believe my own eyes

This has gone far enough
after all we’ve been through
We can be brave
We done all we can humanly do
It’s a time to be tough
A time to be wise
We must stop chasing our dreams and recover our lives

I believe my own eyes
Now I’ve come to the end
All my patience is gone
When I’m doubtful I tend
To believe…

I’d like to believe
But I don’t think that we’ve seen the best of us
And a way to believe is to see where the real future lies
I hope that the pain in your gaze can again be a test of me
and when I look in the mirror
I believe my own eyes

Let’s believe our own eyes
No we’ve come to the end
All our patience is gone
Let’s admit we intend to believe our own eyes

Kim:
… to believe our own eyes

Lyrics

Did I say something wrong
Well if I’ve hurt you then tell me now
Don’t let your fear surround you
Why don’t you talk to me

Well I know what you want
And I know what you need
But believe me baby
They may not be the same
Think it over

Deep in my heart
There’s a place that only you can find
But still there’s a part
Of my life wrapped in confusion
I can’t tell you I’m in love
But I can’t stand to lose you
Please believe me when I say I do
I believe in you, believe in you

Some people believe in love
I’d rather believe in something real
Something that lasts forever
That’s why I’m still with you

So you’re head over heals
And I know now it feels
But believe me baby
It won’t be the same
When it’s over

Deep in my heart
There’s a place that only you can find
But still there’s a part
Of my life wrapped in confusion
I can’t tell you I’m in love
But I can’t stand to lose you
Please believe me when I say I do
I believe in you, believe in you

These worlds I say aren’t meant to hurt
I only want to save you pain
We’ll find a way
To change your heart
And throw away these chains of love
