Love’s a No

Song written by Ricky, Kim and Marty Wilde. Fifth track of the album Close.

Kim about ‘Love’s a no’

My father and brother wrote this melancholy love song, probably without truly knowing how much the words resonated with me personally. Again, Ricky’s incredible skill at crafting a beautiful melody comes to the fore, while my Dad’s honest and sensitive lyrics speak directly to the heart. (1)

Lyrics

Alright – now we’re alone
I know you’re expecting me
To tell you all that I’ve been through
Oh sorry, it takes so long
And anyway, it’s hurting me
So don’t ask, it might hurt you too
Maybe I’m the fool
To turn down the love you’re offering

Thanks – but love’s a no (my baby)
There’s too much at stake
It’s too soon I know (my baby)
And just too much to take

Sometimes – I get scared
Loving on my own again
Some days I just want to cry
Memories won’t set me free
Those memories of how it used to be

Thanks – but love’s a no (my baby)
There’s too much at stake
It’s too soon I know (my baby)
And just too much to take

No – it wasn’t always like this
I used to be the one who was smart
I was a hard girl
I couldn’t get caught – I was strong
Oh – but then I got hurt
How I got hurt
Oh darlin’ – take a little time with me
Darlin’ – take a little time
Just a little time

One day – I don’t know when
Maybe we can try again
Maybe all I need is time
Hold me then say goodbye
Don’t hate me – for all the things I’ve said

Thanks – but love’s a no (my baby)
There’s too much at stake
It’s too soon I know (my baby)
And just too much to take

Oh darlin’ take a little time with me
Oh darlin’ take a little time
Just a little time

Love You More

Remix of You Came created by Groovenut. This dance track has had a 12″ club release in the summer of 2005 and for a while it was due to be released commercially in the spring of 2006. The release was eventually cancelled because they couldn’t get permission for the use of the sample.

They re-created the track with the vocals from You Came (2006) for the CD-single of that track in 2006.

Lyrics

I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes
I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes
I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes
I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes
I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes
I know is
I know is staring
I know is
And when I look into her eyes

You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
No-one could love you more because
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
No-one could love you more because
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
No-one could love you more because
You came
You came
You came
You came

I watch you sleep in the still of the night
You look so pretty when you dream (dream, dream, dream…)

You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
No-one could love you more because
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
You came and changed the way I feel
No-one could love you more
Love you more

Love Will Keep Us Together

Song written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. It was first recorded by Sedaka in 1973 and released as a single in France. Soon after, the brother and sister vocal duo Mac and Katie Kissoon released the song as a single, and this version was the first to chart, peaking at number 12 in the Dutch Top 40 in December.

Captain & Tennille version

In 1975, Captain & Tennille recorded a new version of the track for their debut album, also titled ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’. It became the lead single for that album, and managed to reach the top of the singles charts in Australia, Canada and the USA. In the UK, the single peaked at number 32. The couple also recorded a Spanish version of the track, entitled ‘Por Amor Viviremos’, which got to number 49 in the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, while the English-language version was still in that chart as well.

Kim Wilde version

Kim Wilde recorded a version of the song exclusively for a compilation album called 80’s Re:covered, on which Eighties artists recorded tracks from various decades in Eighties style.

Lyrics

(Love will keep us together)

Love
Love will keep us together
Think of me babe, whenever
Some sweet-talking girl comes along, singing her song
Don’t mess around, you’ve just got to be strong, just stop
‘Cause I really love you, stop
I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart and let love keep us together
Whatever
Keep us together
Whatever

You
You belong to me now
Ain’t gonna set you free now
When those girls start hanging around talking me down
Hear with your heart and you won’t hear a sound, just stop (stop)
‘Cause I really love you, stop (stop)
I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart and let love keep us together

Young and beautiful
Someday your looks will be gone
When the others turn you off
Who’ll be turning you on?

I will, I will, I will
I will be there to share forever
Love will keep us together
I said it before and I’ll say it again while others pretend
I need you now and I’ll need you then, just stop (stop)
‘Cause I really love you, stop (stop)
I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart and let love keep us together
Whatever
Keep us together
Whatever

I said love will keep us together
Who’ll be turning you on
I will, I will, I will, I will
I’ll be there to share forever
I will, I will
I said love will keep us together

Love Moves

Released in May 1990, ‘Love moves’ was Kim Wilde’s seventh studio album. Compared to its predecessor Close the album was considered a commercial failure. Kim has stated a few times that during the recordings of this album she was losing sight of things that mattered to her, and that the whole process of being famous and in the picture finally caught up with her.

Music

The songs were all co-written by Kim: six with Ricki Wilde and four with Tony Swain. Themes on the lyrics were, once again, the environment (‘Who’s to Blame’ and ‘World in Perfect Harmony’), the plastic world of celebrities in America (‘In Hollywood’) and of course some love songs.

Tracks

This album contains the tracks It’s Here, Love (Send Him Back to Me), Storm in our Hearts, World in Perfect Harmony, Someday, Time, Who’s to Blame, Can’t Get Enough (of Your Love), In Hollywood, I Can’t Say Goodbye.

Artwork

The sleeve was designed by the bureau 3a, with photography by John Rutter.

Formats

‘Love moves’ was originally released on LP, CD and tape.

Kim about ‘Love moves’

The lp is called ‘Love moves’, why the title?
Because it’s true: love makes you do even bigger things.
Is ‘Love moves’ a way of describing the past few years?
In a certain way it is, from the past year. And with some of the subjects I’ve been busy for a longer time. Those are ideas that have developed. (1)

I think the album itself still stands, it was a very strong album, and it was very disapppointing that it didn’t do well. But it didn’t really come too much as a big surprise, because my career before then had always been very up and down. So it wasn’t a complete shock, but it was very disappointing. (2)

Live performances

‘Love is holy’ was performed live during the German tour in December 1992, the Hits Tour in 1994, Here & Now Australia in 2003 and various live concerts in 2006.

Kim about ‘Love is holy’

I went to LA to do three tracks live with Rick Nowels. When I got there he was very excited about the fact that I was there, he started playing me all of these different songs, and one of them was “Love is holy” which he wrote with Ellen Shipley. He just played it to me on guitar, and I just said to him, ‘How long have you had that song?’. And he said that he had had it a year. I said, ‘You had this song a year?? D’you think perhaps we should do it?’ and he said ‘definitely’. Strange, the song’s been around for a year, but I’m glad it had… (1)

Do you know, he worked me so hard that I ended up in hospital? (laughs) No, literally. I was in L.A. and I was getting these terrible headaches and I couldn’t work out why. I was really worried about it getting on the plane and I made them take me to a hospital to have a look and see what was going on. But it was literally just the stress and strain of working with Rick Nowels in the studio. It was very intense, really exciting. He was a ball of energy. He loves pop music like you wouldn’t believe. (2)

Rick Nowels about ‘Love is holy’

We were finishing up songs and I was looking for another single for Kim. Ellen Shipley and I had an unfinished song called ‘Love is holy’ and we played it for Kim. She loved it straight away and said she thought it was a smash. We finished the lyrics and went in the studio the next day and cut it. The record is entirely live with most of Kim’s live vocal and just a few guitar overdubs. (3)

Lyrics

Love is holy, don’t forget it
It will heal you if you let it
Love will strip you, leave you naked
Love is sexy, love is sacred

I put my faith in me and you
Somehow I know that we’ll put through
Oh I feel my life passing by
Sometimes it makes me want to cry
Thank God I’ve got you by my side

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

I don’t understand the world today
Is everything made just to throw away
But you and I (you and I)
Get closer as time goes by (till I die)
I feel my love intensify
Baby you’re a spiritual high

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

Love is holy, don’t forget it
It will heal you if you let it
Love will strip you, leave you naked
Love is sexy, love is sacred

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me
(Every night I hope and pray)
(Nothing takes your love away)
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

Love Is

Released on 18 May 1992, ‘Love is’ is Kim Wilde’s eighth studio album and her fourth for MCA Records. It was a modest success in Europe and the UK.

Music

The lyrics of ‘Love Is’ showed a more confident, more mature Kim Wilde who was more at peace with herself and the life she was leading. This showed in the album as well, as it contained lyrics which were more imaginative than ever before.
Kim co-wrote seven of the eleven tracks: three with Ricki Wilde, one with Rick Nowels, one with Steve Byrd, one with Rick Nowels and Ricki Wilde and one with Steve Byrd and Ricki Wilde. Two songs were written by Ricki Wilde and Mick Silver, ‘Love is holy’ was written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley and ‘Heart over Mind’ was written by David Munday, Sandy Stewart, John Hall and Nick Whitecross.
Some of the tracks were slightly rock-oriented, but most of the album sounded smooth and poppy.
The three tracks produced by Rick Nowels sounded ‘Belinda Carlisle-esque’, according to some, whereas the eight other songs, which were produced by Ricki Wilde, sounded more like ‘classic Kim’.

Tracks

The album contains the tracks Love Is Holy, Who Do You Think You Are?, I Believe in You, Touched By Your Magic, I Won’t Change the Way That I Feel, Million Miles Away, Light of the Moon (Belongs to Me), Heart over Mind, A Miracle’s Coming, Try Again, Too Late.

Artwork

The new Kim Wilde was clothed in long dresses. It was in fact this dress, worn on the sleeve of the album, which went on to raise 900 UK pounds during an auction for charity at a Kim Wilde Fan Meeting.
The sleeve design was done by Sammy Farrington Design. Photography was done by Zanna.

‘Love Is’ was originally released on LP, CD, tape and the short-lived DCC format.

Kim about ‘Love is’

My brother, Rick and I sat down just prior to recording the album and decided we wanted to experiment writing with some other writers which we haven’t really done an awful lot before, and it actually coincided with an approach from Rick Nowels via MCA, whether we’d be interested in working with him. So we sort of, we’re only a little bit skeptical only because we had been doing some other writing with some other writers from America and it wasn’t going in the way we wanted it to go, it was going really well, we were writing some great songs, but prior experience hadn’t been that fruitful, so we’d always just like came up with the stuff ourselves. But anyway he came and had meeting with us and like within 14 minutes of actually meeting him in this room we started writing a song and the song was called “A Miracle’s Coming”, that’s one of the tracks we did with him in Los Angeles. (1)

For me, this album is like a renaissance, almost like it was when I very first began. It almost feels like I’m beginning again. (2)

In the mid 80’s it was very fashionable to work with a successful producer. At one time, the producer became more important than the artist or the person who wrote the song. It was completely mad! I preferred to stay away from all of that. I didn’t want my albums to have somebody else’s sound. So as a result, I only worked with my brother. But we both wanted to try something different. The American producer Rick Nowels made us an offer. He came to see us in England whilst we were already recording. In less than half an hour, we decided to do a few tracks together. (3)

Kim about ‘Love in the natural way’

This was the fifth and final single from Close and one of my personal favorite love songs. I often still sing this today in an acoustic set at my concerts; the melody and sentiment still as potent as they were back in ’88… perhaps even more so. (1)

Lyrics

Well it sounded like a whisper
But soon became a cry
And the moment that I touch you
I know the reason why – we got love
No union is stronger than a woman with a man
I’m gonna give love in the natural way
With everything I can
Never mind if things go wrong
You and I will still be strong
And how I love you now

Oh baby, we’re here tonight
We can make it last forever
Wen can make it last for life
Oh, baby, no matter what
I’m gonna give love in the natural way
With everything I got

All times it can be gentle
And at times it can be cruel
It can treat you like a stranger
It can treat you like a fool
But tonight I wanna hold you
Cos tonight you’re gonna see
I’m gonna give you love in the natural way
And keep you here with me
Lovin’ like you’ve never known
Now at last We’re on our own
And I still love you now

Oh, baby, we’re here tonight
We can make it last forever
We can make it last for life
Oh, babe, it’s me and you
And it’s a natural reaction
When you feel the way we do
What is left that’s still unknown
Let’s discover on our own

Cos when love’s the culmination
Of everything you feel
Well it’s the only thing that’s precious
It’s the only thing that’s real

Lyrics

This road we’ve already travelled far
And we carry every scar
But we’ve still got a long way to go
There may have been times we lost our way
But I’m here with you today
And that’s all you need to know

And now as the pages turn
The lessons that we had to learn
Make us stronger, now we’re flying once again

Because
Love
Love conquers all
The rise after the fall
It never lets you down
Love
Love conquers all
Breaking down the walls
Can turn your world around

In this world it’s not easy to believe
Won’t you keep your faith in me
Hold on tight and don’t let go
And this battle we shall overcome
We’ll keep fighting til we’ve won
Love is stronger than we know

And now as the pages turn
The lessons that we had to learn
Make us stronger, now we’re flying once again

Because …

Love is a victory, and you can’t fight it
Together we can win if we’re united
Let love forever reign, surrender to your heart

Because …

Love Blonde: The Best of Kim Wilde

The second compilation album released by EMI in 1993. This sudden move by EMI France to release a redesigned version of The Very Best of Kim Wilde with three extra tracks in the spring of 1993 caused MCA to postpone the release of The Singles Collection 1981-1993. The CD in itself was interesting for its inclusion of two 12″ mixes and an old B-side, all of which were never released on CD before.

This album contains the tracks Kids in America, Chequered Love, Water on Glass, 2 6 5 8 0, Boys, Our Town, Everything We Know, You’ll Never Be So Wrong, Cambodia, View From a Bridge, Love Blonde, House of Salome, Dancing in the Dark, Child Come Away, Take Me Tonight, Stay Awhile, Watching for Shapes, Dancing in the Dark (remix by Nile Rodgers), Love Blonde (remix).

Cover versions

‘Love blonde’ has been covered by Lynn Sweet and in Swedish as ‘Hon går rakt fram’ by Cotton Club.

Kim about ‘Love blonde’

‘Love blonde’ is a real tongue-in-cheek ‘up yours’ to all the poeple who take the piss out of blondes. There’s that dizzy sexual stereotype of blondes with no brains and this is just really taking the rise out of those people who think that – and the blondes who believe it. (1)

When my dad told me that he wanted to write a song called ‘Love Blonde’, I just looked at him and said, you know, give me a break, I don’t think I could handle the sort of flack I’d get, making a record with a title like that. He just said, ‘look, either you do it, or you don’t’, and that was it. I could see what he was getting at.
So I went out and bought the most over the top dress I could find, and I send it up as much as I dare because I’m not really that much of an extrovert performer in that way. It’s going to annoy an awful lot of people, I think it’s just fun, and I look upon my career as having as much fun as I can. (2)

I really wanted to do something in the style of the Fifties. But in a contemporary way. A bit like Queen with ‘Crazy little thing called love’ or ‘Runaway boys’ by the Stray Cats. My father who writes all the lyrics grew up in the Fifties. He has a closet full of old rock and roll records. And he was a big British rock idol himself, together with Cliff and Adam Faith. You can trust him with the job. Brother Ricky composed the song. To keep true to the original style, we dressed in clothes from that era. And we used an upright bass. (3)

Well, unfortunately, people don’t seem to realise sometimes that I’ve got a sense of humour. A lot of things that I do or I say are dictated by humour. It’s like this last single .. It’s a bit like a tongue in cheek. I like this image of the platinum blonde, irresistible woman, like any other woman does, but what I sing there, it is for fun. Because I’ve got a good sense of humour, I like to look at myself with humour, laugh about myself . (4)

(It’s) not about myself, but I do sing about the type of girl people take me for. It’s about all the cliches about blondes, that they’re sexy, but dumb and cool, etcetera. I think it’s a funny lyric, but you shouldn’t take it literally. It doesn’t matter to me that the media portray me as this sex symbol, or that people really see me like that. They don’t really know me, and they don’t know any better than that. As long as they buy my records and accept me as an artist, I am very satisfied. (5)

I speak about the cliches that people talk about when they talk about blondes – that they would be a bit dumb, vain and crazy. Brigitte Bardot has always suffered from that image. And I have also had to deal with this at the beginning of my career. The song is not so seriously, it’s more like a parody. (6)

I hesitated recording that song. I didn’t want to emphasize it too much. But the song was too strong to resist. I felt that it wouldn’t be a hit in England. It’s almost a crime being attractive and being able to sing too. (7)

I had kind of a problem with that at the time. Should I really be singing this song about me? And I asked dad, ‘Is it about me?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s about the mythology of the blonde sex symbol.’ I said, ‘Yes, but that’s how everyone’s perceiving me,’ so he told me to just take the piss out of it and enjoy it. And he was right, you know. It is all superficial, that side of it. So kind of acknowledging it in a song like that, because it was an unpredictable thing to do, knocks people back a bit. Most people have fun playing about with my image, talking about me, so I thought, ‘Why not do it myself?’. (8)

Lyrics

Something’s coming down the street
Something static under your feet
Never looking left or right
‘coz she’ll just blow you out of sight

She’s never waiting on your smile
Devastating, what’s in her style ?
Situation no-go zone
But she’ll cut loose when she’s alone

She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s got that sensuality for love

When the boys say “how you been
What you doin’, Can we get in ?”
Eyes’ll flash and lips will smile
And she’ll just tease them for a while

‘Cos now you see her, now you don’t
You could be there, only you won’t
If you’ve got that savoir faire
Well that girl knows and she’s aware

She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s got that sensuality for love

Oooh, well if she fills your dreams tonight
Oooh, just lay back and hold on tight

She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s a love Blonde
She’s got that sensuality for love

Lyrics

You placed your bet while you were laughing in my face
And you let another woman take my place
No you wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t hear
I tried to change your mind
I never knew love was so conceited, so unkind

I was always one step ahead of you
Deep in my heart I always knew
Now admit it, you’re gonna lose this fight
I’m not waiting any longer
Get him back to me tonight

Love send him back to me
Now that you’ve set him free
You better admit defeat
Love send him back to me

You broke her heart while you gambled with their souls
Now she’s just another sad adventure you’ll forget
But he didn’t love her
Still you tried to satisfy your goal
I never knew love was so deceiving, so cold

I was always one step ahead of you
Deep in my heart I always knew
Now admit it, you’re gonna lose this fight
I’m not waiting any longer
Get him back to me tonight

Lyrics

Thinkin’ here we go again
Tell me will it ever end
Contending for who’s right or wrong
We’re becoming enemies
Taking all my energy
Why can’t we get along

I don’t know you anymore
Where’s the man that I adored?
I’ve lost him in this war of words
Torn apart
So where to go from here now?

‘Cos my heart can’t let you go
Hard as I try
Baby time won’t heal my soul
Losing you losing myself… again
I can’t see tomorrow
No my heart can’t let you go
It’s lost without you

Do we carr yon like this
In a spiritual abyss
Just waiting for the winds of change
Reminiscing witha friend
You said our love would never end
I need those words again

After all is said and done
Through it all you’re still the one
I want you to come back to me
Fight for love
Now before it’s to late

‘Cos my heart can’t let you go
Hard as I try
Baby time won’t heal my soul
Losing you losing myself… again
I can’t see tomorrow
No my heart can’t let you go
It’s lost without you
