Live performances

‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ was performed live during the German tour in December 1992.

Kim about ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

That was one of the early songs that my brother and I came up with, and our confidence was quite low at the start of this album, we were throwing loads of ideas away and this was one that was just about to get put in the bin. So I had this inspired idea for the lyric just at the last moment really and things just came together very quickly. I wrote the lyrics in a few hours and we recorded it very quickly. It’s quite an angry little song, kind of encapsulates how I feel a lot about fame and how people handle it or don’t, and it’s not all together about one person or even a lot of people or it doesn’t even not include myself so it’s a sort of disenchanted view at fame. (1)

It wasn’t about anyone in particular. It was inspired, obviously, by lots of huge personalities around us and now I think about it, it does take a big personality to go out there and be a popstar and carry it off and of course some of that ego does go to some people’s heads and sometimes it is gross to see. Sometimes it’s a bit offensive and boring and tired. But most of the time I would say the vast majority of time most artists carry it off with a lot of humility, a lot of class, a lot of excitement… I think musicians get a lot of bad press about being big-headed or ‘it’s gone to their head’ or… I think most of them don’t actually deserve it and there aren’t more people like that in the music industry than there are in other industries. I spent a few years in the horticultural industry and I can tell you that there’s a huge amount of egos in that industry as there are in the music industry. Just not written about. (2)

Lyrics

A long time ago you promised yourself
They’re all gonna know me someday
Well you got what you wanted
But look at you now
You lost something good on the way
So where did it go
Tell me where did it go
But you wouldn’t know

Snap your fingers and somebody runs
You don’t care how they feel
Just as long as they come
Got your head in the stars
Now you’ve come this far
Just who do you think you are?

Now everything seems to be going your way
And everyone loves what they see
But you ruin it all with the things that you say
So tell me how does it feel
When you’re all alone
How does it feel
You’re alone
Nothing is real

Snap your fingers and somebody runs
You don’t care how they feel
Just as long as they come
Got your head in the stars
Now you’ve come this far
Just who do you think you are?
You believe a ridiculous lie
You can’t see you’ve become
All the things you despise
But I know who you are
And you’ve gone too far
Just who do you think you are?

You can keep all your dreams
But you don’t have to lose yourself
Cos one day you’re gonna break
When the face in the mirror
Looking back at you’s
A stranger that you can’t place
Just who do you think you are?

Snap your fingers and somebody runs
You don’t care how they feel
Just as long as they come
Got your head in the stars
Now you’ve come this far
Just who do you think you are?
You believe a ridiculous lie
You can’t see you’ve become
All the things you despise
But I know who you are
And you’ve gone too far
Just who do you think you are?

Lyrics

I can’t see your face
Hear the excuses for
The mistakes that you make
I’ve heard all your lies
I don’t know how much I can take
Before I break
I’ve tried to be so strong
While you broke the promises
All the vows that we made
We know something’s wrong
But we carry on anyway
Day by day
You’re the one who let me down
And now I find it hard to forgive
In my heart

But I’ll try again
To forget all the pain
And love you again
I’ll try again
Though you hurt me I know
I can’t let you go

How can we forget
The sweetness of yesterday
We just can’t let it go
Lost in bitterness
I’m losing my self control
And my soul
Cos you’ll be the one who let me down
And now I find it hard to forgive
In my mind

But I’ll try again
To forget all the pain
And love you again
I’ll try again
Though you hurt me I know
I can’t let you go

Oh why, why do we hurt each other more
When there’s a way
Cos we never really found
What we were looking for
Can we try again

Cos You’re the one who let me down
And now I find it hard to forgive
In my heart

But I’ll try again
To forget all the pain
And love you again
I’ll try again
Though you hurt me I know
I can’t let you go

Ooh, I’ll try again

Lyrics

I had no reason to believe that love was true
Infatuation was a game for lonely fools
I wanted freedom but I guess I always knew
You love would entangle my emotions

I feel the power when I hold you close
Got to feel you, near me, baby
You take me higher than I thought I could go
Can’t hide it any longer, I need you to know

Now I’m touched by your magic
At last I can breathe in all of your love
I couldn’t hide from the feelings here inside
Cos I’ve waited so long
This is some kind of magic
I know that to lose your love would be
more than I could bear
I would you anywhere

I can’t imagine I could change the way I feel
When I paint a picture of love it’s you I’m thinking of
No hesitation, when you call me I’ll be there
You know, we’ve got something to believe in

I never knew it was so easy to love
But I just can’t help it, baby
This love is moving and it’s out of control
Can’t try any harder, I need you to know

Even when the clouds drift across the sky
I know that we’ll make it somehow
Together we’ll survive
If we only believe in love

This love is loving and it’s out of control
Can’t try any harder, I need you to know

At last I can breathe in all your love
I couldn’t hide from the feelings here
inside…

Lyrics

Hard to get a view of things
Though a broken window
Hard to understand the reasons
Why love comes and goes
Just when you turn a corner
And think that you’ll find
Some peace of mind
Confusion will strike you blind

It’s too late to turn back now
It’s too late to turn it all around
It’s too late, no words to say
I know it’s gonna be another lonely day
I can’t find a reason I should stay

Hard to understand the reasons
Why love comes and goes
Just when you turn a corner
And think that you’ll find
Some peace of mind
Confusion will strike you blind

t’s too late to turn back now
It’s too late to turn it all around
It’s too late, no words to say
I know it’s gonna be another lonely day
I can’t find a reason I should stay

(I know, I know)
I know it’s gonna be another lonely day
(I know, I know)
I know it’s gonna be another lonely day
Confusion will strike you blind

It’s too late to turn back now
It’s too late to turn it all around
It’s too late, no words to say
Cos I know it’s gonna be another lonely day
But I can’t find a reason I should stay

Live performances

‘Love is holy’ was performed live during the German tour in December 1992, the Hits Tour in 1994, Here & Now Australia in 2003 and various live concerts in 2006.

Kim about ‘Love is holy’

I went to LA to do three tracks live with Rick Nowels. When I got there he was very excited about the fact that I was there, he started playing me all of these different songs, and one of them was “Love is holy” which he wrote with Ellen Shipley. He just played it to me on guitar, and I just said to him, ‘How long have you had that song?’. And he said that he had had it a year. I said, ‘You had this song a year?? D’you think perhaps we should do it?’ and he said ‘definitely’. Strange, the song’s been around for a year, but I’m glad it had… (1)

Do you know, he worked me so hard that I ended up in hospital? (laughs) No, literally. I was in L.A. and I was getting these terrible headaches and I couldn’t work out why. I was really worried about it getting on the plane and I made them take me to a hospital to have a look and see what was going on. But it was literally just the stress and strain of working with Rick Nowels in the studio. It was very intense, really exciting. He was a ball of energy. He loves pop music like you wouldn’t believe. (2)

Rick Nowels about ‘Love is holy’

We were finishing up songs and I was looking for another single for Kim. Ellen Shipley and I had an unfinished song called ‘Love is holy’ and we played it for Kim. She loved it straight away and said she thought it was a smash. We finished the lyrics and went in the studio the next day and cut it. The record is entirely live with most of Kim’s live vocal and just a few guitar overdubs. (3)

Lyrics

Love is holy, don’t forget it
It will heal you if you let it
Love will strip you, leave you naked
Love is sexy, love is sacred

I put my faith in me and you
Somehow I know that we’ll put through
Oh I feel my life passing by
Sometimes it makes me want to cry
Thank God I’ve got you by my side

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

I don’t understand the world today
Is everything made just to throw away
But you and I (you and I)
Get closer as time goes by (till I die)
I feel my love intensify
Baby you’re a spiritual high

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

Love is holy, don’t forget it
It will heal you if you let it
Love will strip you, leave you naked
Love is sexy, love is sacred

Every night I hope and pray
Nothing takes your love away
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me
(Every night I hope and pray)
(Nothing takes your love away)
I lie awake just to watch you breathe
Love is holy when you lay with me
Love is holy baby stay with me

Love Is

Released on 18 May 1992, ‘Love is’ is Kim Wilde’s eighth studio album and her fourth for MCA Records. It was a modest success in Europe and the UK.

Music

The lyrics of ‘Love Is’ showed a more confident, more mature Kim Wilde who was more at peace with herself and the life she was leading. This showed in the album as well, as it contained lyrics which were more imaginative than ever before.
Kim co-wrote seven of the eleven tracks: three with Ricki Wilde, one with Rick Nowels, one with Steve Byrd, one with Rick Nowels and Ricki Wilde and one with Steve Byrd and Ricki Wilde. Two songs were written by Ricki Wilde and Mick Silver, ‘Love is holy’ was written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley and ‘Heart over Mind’ was written by David Munday, Sandy Stewart, John Hall and Nick Whitecross.
Some of the tracks were slightly rock-oriented, but most of the album sounded smooth and poppy.
The three tracks produced by Rick Nowels sounded ‘Belinda Carlisle-esque’, according to some, whereas the eight other songs, which were produced by Ricki Wilde, sounded more like ‘classic Kim’.

Tracks

The album contains the tracks Love Is Holy, Who Do You Think You Are?, I Believe in You, Touched By Your Magic, I Won’t Change the Way That I Feel, Million Miles Away, Light of the Moon (Belongs to Me), Heart over Mind, A Miracle’s Coming, Try Again, Too Late.

Artwork

The new Kim Wilde was clothed in long dresses. It was in fact this dress, worn on the sleeve of the album, which went on to raise 900 UK pounds during an auction for charity at a Kim Wilde Fan Meeting.
The sleeve design was done by Sammy Farrington Design. Photography was done by Zanna.

Formats

‘Love Is’ was originally released on LP, CD, tape and the short-lived DCC format.

Kim about ‘Love is’

My brother, Rick and I sat down just prior to recording the album and decided we wanted to experiment writing with some other writers which we haven’t really done an awful lot before, and it actually coincided with an approach from Rick Nowels via MCA, whether we’d be interested in working with him. So we sort of, we’re only a little bit skeptical only because we had been doing some other writing with some other writers from America and it wasn’t going in the way we wanted it to go, it was going really well, we were writing some great songs, but prior experience hadn’t been that fruitful, so we’d always just like came up with the stuff ourselves. But anyway he came and had meeting with us and like within 14 minutes of actually meeting him in this room we started writing a song and the song was called “A Miracle’s Coming”, that’s one of the tracks we did with him in Los Angeles. (1)

For me, this album is like a renaissance, almost like it was when I very first began. It almost feels like I’m beginning again. (2)

In the mid 80’s it was very fashionable to work with a successful producer. At one time, the producer became more important than the artist or the person who wrote the song. It was completely mad! I preferred to stay away from all of that. I didn’t want my albums to have somebody else’s sound. So as a result, I only worked with my brother. But we both wanted to try something different. The American producer Rick Nowels made us an offer. He came to see us in England whilst we were already recording. In less than half an hour, we decided to do a few tracks together. (3)

Lyrics

(Light of the moon…)

You can’t touch it
It won’t let you near
You can’t hold it
Cos it will disappear
You can’t keep it
It don’t belong to you
And when you need it
There’s nothing you can do
Love has the final word
You’re a fool if you can’t see
But I know that the light of the moon
Belongs to me

Not the warmth of the sun
Caress of the breeze
Not the sound of the wind
As it blows through the trees
But the light of the moon
Belongs to me
Not the warmth of your smile
Caress of your hand
Not the love that you give me
Again and again
But the light of the moon
Belongs to me

So many people forget it
Set love free
Love is a river
Love is a raging sea
Don’t try to tame it
Or you will watch it die
Don’t try to chain it
You’ve got to let it fly
Love has the final word
You’re a fool if you can’t see
But I know that the light of the moon
Belongs to me

Not the warmth of the sun
Caress of the breeze
Not the sound of the wind
As it blows through the trees
But the light of the moon
Belongs to me
Not the warmth of your smile
Caress of your hand
Not the love that you give me
Again and again
But the light of the moon
Belongs to me

Ooh you say I live in a dream
That I live in a make-beleive
But I know that the light of the moon
Belongs to me

Not the warmth of the sun
Caress of your hand
Not the love that you give me
Again and again
But the light of the moon
Belongs to me

Lyrics

If I live a thousand years or more
You’ll still be the one I’m living for
And every night I whisper a prayer
That every day of my life you will always be there

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
About you baby…

If I only have one life to live
I will give you all I have to give
So don’t believe these are faithless times
Cause as long as I live, you will always be mine

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way I feel

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel

I can’t stop the world from changing
I can’t say what time may reveal
But I know from now until forever
I won’t change the way that I feel
About you baby…

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way I feel
About you baby

I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel
I won’t change the way that I feel

Lyrics

Did I say something wrong
Well if I’ve hurt you then tell me now
Don’t let your fear surround you
Why don’t you talk to me

Well I know what you want
And I know what you need
But believe me baby
They may not be the same
Think it over

Deep in my heart
There’s a place that only you can find
But still there’s a part
Of my life wrapped in confusion
I can’t tell you I’m in love
But I can’t stand to lose you
Please believe me when I say I do
I believe in you, believe in you

Some people believe in love
I’d rather believe in something real
Something that lasts forever
That’s why I’m still with you

So you’re head over heals
And I know now it feels
But believe me baby
It won’t be the same
When it’s over

Deep in my heart
There’s a place that only you can find
But still there’s a part
Of my life wrapped in confusion
I can’t tell you I’m in love
But I can’t stand to lose you
Please believe me when I say I do
I believe in you, believe in you

These worlds I say aren’t meant to hurt
I only want to save you pain
We’ll find a way
To change your heart
And throw away these chains of love

Kim about ‘Heart over mind’

‘Heart over mind’ was a song that was sent just as we thought we’d finished the album, hence 11 tracks, and you know my brother and I were very happy the way the album was sounding and then Rick Nowels sent over some songs and it was amongst some songs he sent. It was written by Sandy Stewart who I’d met in Los Angeles and David Munday, who luckily for us was living in Hampstead in London. So he came and re-created what he had done on the demo which was amazing he’s an incredible piano player, well just musician really, a very talented guy. (1)

Lyrics

You say this love is a prison
The door’s open wide, you know
You can stay or you can go
Make up you mind
I say this love is forever
And I don’t know why we cry
When we can build a mountain high

And all this time we take up
We analyse every word and every move
You sleep on it
I’ll wake up
I’ll wake up, feelin’ what I always do yeah

Heart over mind
Say love
Say love
Say love, this time

You say this love is a dead end
A road going nowhere, but oh
You can always choose another road
I say that this one is paved with god
How can I ever – how can I make you understand

That all these nights we stay divided
We pull apart everything that makes us strong
Why don’t you try?
Why don’t you fight it?
You can think about it, think about it all day long, but

Heart over mind
Say love
Say love
Say love, this time

(Heart over mind)

Cos love breaks down all walls
No matter how high, they all will fall

Ooh baby, really miss you
Ooh baby, I want to be with you

Heart over mind
Say love
Say love
Say love, this time

Lyrics

Are you the devil come to carry away my soul
I want to love you but I don’t want to lose control
You’re taking over me with each little move you make
I want to trust you but it could be a big mistake
I know

But the moment you’re here everything’s right
I lose the fear of the shadows in the night
But then the moment you’re gone everything’s wrong
It never felt this strong

Baby hold on
A miracle’s coming
Can you believe it
Take it in and breathe it
Baby hold on
A miracle’s coming
You gotta understand
It’s right here in our hands
I know

I hear the questions when you look into my eyes
You’re scared of rumours, but I tell you they’re only lies
Is this forever, how can either of us be sure
All I can tell you is I never felt this before
Oh no

But the moment you’re here everything’s right
I lose the fear of the shadows in the night
But babe the moment you’re gone
Everything’s wrong
It never felt this strong

Baby hold on
A miracle’s coming
Can you believe it
Take it in and breathe it
Baby hold on
A miracle’s coming
You gotta understand
It’s right here in our hands
I know

Hold on… take it and breathe it

A miracle’s coming
