One Door Closes

Song written by Paul Moessl and Steve Glen.
Recorded in February 1993 for possible inclusion as a bonus track on The Singles Collection 1981-1993, but it wasn’t used in the end.
In September 2024, the song was included on the deluxe cd/dvd edition of Love Is.

Lyrics

Driven
By the will to survive
I guess that I was only makin’ love to your pride
Tempted
By the thrill of your touch
I could have been the one you loved
I may have known too much

Don’t let changes turn the pages
Don’t let changes break your heart
All that’s fading in my heart again
Crying for a love so rare
Heaven must have tears to spare

As one door closes
Another door opens
Don’t let love tear you apart
As one door closes
Another door opens
This time, it’s hard trying
As one door closes
Another door opens
Don’t let love tear you apart
As one door closes
Another door opens
Baby, I’m just searching for your love

Drifting on a sea of calm
Nothing but emptiness
No more, no harm

Don’t let changes turn the pages

Don’t let changes break your heart
Oh, it’s raining in my heart again
Crying for a love so rare
Heaven must have tears to spare

Oh, it’s raining in my heart again
Heaven must have tears to spare

As one door closes
Another door opens
Don’t let love tear you apart
As one door closes
Another door opens
This time, it’s hard trying

One Direction

One Direction are an English-Irish pop boy band formed in London, England in 2010. The group are composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson; former member Zayn Malik departed from the group in March 2015.

The group signed with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records after forming and finishing third in the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor in 2010. During these TV shows they performed a version of Kids in America. One Direction achieved third place in the competition and immediately after the final, their song Forever Young, which would have been released if they had won X Factor, was ‘leaked’ on the internet.

One Direction’s five albums, ‘Up All Night’ (2011), ‘Take Me Home’ (2012), ‘Midnight Memories’ (2013), ‘Four’ (2014), and ‘Made in the A.M.’ (2015), topped charts in most major markets, and generated hit singles including ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ (their first number one on the UK Singles Chart), ‘Live While We’re Young’, ‘Best Song Ever’, ‘Story of My Life’ and ‘Drag Me Down’. After the release of ‘Four’, One Direction became the first band in the US Billboard 200 history to have their first four albums debut at number one. Their third album, ‘Midnight Memories’, was the best-selling album worldwide of 2013. Considered teen idols, One Direction were often subject to fan hysteria. They have embarked on four world tours, two of which were all-stadium. The band’s ‘Where We Are Tour’, in support of ‘Midnight Memories’, was the highest-grossing concert tour in 2014, the highest-grossing tour by a vocal group in history, and the 15th highest-grossing concert tour of all time.

The band went on hiatus in January 2016, allowing all members to pursue other projects.

Oh Darling

Song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was released by the Beatles on the 1969 album ‘Abbey Road’. It appeared as a single in Central America and Japan only. The song is one of several tracks on ‘Abbey Road’ that have never been performed onstage by McCartney or any other of the Beatles to date.

Kim Wilde performed a version of the song together with Jools Holland and his band for the 23 April 2018 edition of his radio show on BBC Radio 2.

Kim about ‘Oh Darling’

I’ve been listening to that song since I was nine years old. ‘Abbey Road’ came into the house via my dad and I’ve never sung it. I sung it in my head. ‘Kim Wilde sings the blues’, it’s got legs, doesn’t it? After my death metal album. I’ve got it all planned.

Lyrics

Oh! Darling, please believe me
I’ll never do you no harm
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm

Oh! Darling, if you leave me
I’ll never make it alone
Believe me when I beg you
Don’t ever leave me alone

When you told me
You didn’t need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me
You didn’t need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried

Oh! Darling, please believe me
I’ll never make it alone
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm

When you told me
You didn’t need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me
You didn’t need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried

Oh! Darling, please believe me
I’ll never let you down
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm

Our town

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde. Second track of the album Kim Wilde.

Live performances

‘Our town’ was performed live during the Debut Tour in 1982 only.

Marty about ‘Our town’

We put this track down and, with all the synthesizers on, it just sounded like a city song. It’s written for the kid who lives in an area he should really get out of. So many youngsters in this generation are crowded into badly designed housing schemes – and when old enough to be independent, they should get out into the world and explore. If our song influences young people to think about that possibility, then the song succeeds. (1)

Lyrics

This is our town, this is my place
This is where my whole world is lived in
Nothing much, and just out of reach of all the city lights
It’s a high town, it’s a low town
It’s get here, come on you grow town
No-one does, but everyone thinks they’re gonna make it soon

This is one place I respected
Now I feel it’s really dejected
No-one cares and the people just stare
And a man on the box says
“Hey you, don’t walk away, vote for me
You’ll get more pay, keep working hard”
But they work slow

Here it comes now, Sunday morning
Just another sleepy town yawning
Down below everything looks just like another day
But, in the warm glow of the sunrise
There’s a child who’s searching with young eyes
Looking ’round and feeling inside he’s gonna fly away

There was one time I was leaving
But the folks around me kept grieving
Friends said go, but my dad said no
And my mum kept saying
“Don’t go, don’t go away – don’t leave us
You’ve got to stay – just raise them kids”
Oh mother no

No prospects, just projects
Don’t try to tell me we’re living
There’s no real need to try
Can’t you see this town gonna die

Hail the new age, it’s a rat cage
Join the place for breeding dumb spieces
All stacked up and doing whatever someone tells them to
Burn the place down, make it dead ground
Show the people just what they’re missing
Wake up, wake up, can’t you believe in what I’m telling you

There’s the house where I was born in
Now it’s changed without any warning
Cranes just crash and bricks just smash
While a billboard’s saying
“Let’s go, let’s get away – come fly me
You’ve weeks to pay – when sunshine calls”
But I won’t go

This is our town

Ordinary World

Song written by Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, James Bates and Warren Cuccurullo and originally recorded by Duran Duran.

Duran Duran version

Simon Le Bon has been evasive about the inspiration for the lyric of the song, but it is apparently the second part of a trilogy written about the death of his friend David Miles in 1986. The first was ‘Do You Believe in Shame’ (1988) and the last was ‘Out of My Mind’ (1997). Duran Duran released the track as the lead single from their self-titled 1993 album on 1 December 1992. It reached number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number 6 in the UK singles chart.

Kim Wilde version

Kim Wilde started performing the song live in 2016. The first live performance took place on 26 May 2016 in Rüdesheim (Germany). In her version, she sings the first part of the song with Ricky on acoustic guitar, and in the second part the band joins in.

Orange Sector

Band formed by Lars Feiker and Martin Bodewell in Hannover (Germany) in 1992. Their first single, released in 1994, was a cover version of Kids in America. The band has released 12 albums and a handful of singles since then.

One Small Step Appeal

On 18 July 1990, Kim was one of 6000 people walking through London in aid of the One Small Step Appeal, which was started by Guy’s Hospital in London to finance operations on children with a brain disorder. The sponsored walkers raised a total of 300.000 UK pounds.
Kim was asked by the hospital to officially hand over the money to one of their patients, the 13 year old Emmett de Montery.
