One Night With You

Song written by Dave Bartholomew, Pearl King and Anita Steiman. The song was originally written and recorded under the title ‘One Night (Of Sin)’ and had been a hit for Smiley Lewis. Elvis recorded a version of the song in its original form on 18 January 1957. This version would not be released until 1983.

Both Elvis’ manager and record company had reservations about the suggestive lyrics. Elvis did not give up on the song. He continued to play with it during his spare time, finally rewriting the lyrics that he felt were holding the song captive. It was Elvis himself who reworked ‘One night of sin is what I’m now paying for’ into ‘One night with you is what I’m now praying for.’ On 23 February 1957, at Radio Recorders in Los Angeles, he showed up with his new lyrics, feeling sure they would meet his label’s approval. It was issued as a single in October 1958 and peaked at number 4 on Billboard’s singles chart. The single reached number one twice on the UK Singles Chart: upon its original release in 1958, and again in January 2005 when the song became the UK’s 1000th number 1 single.

Kim Wilde performed a cover of this song on the 1987 TV special Love Me Tender, in which she also performed Big Hunk o’ Love and Treat Me Nice. The song appeared to have been pre-recorded in a studio, but was never released on record.

Lyrics

One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true

Just call my name
And I’ll be right by your side
I want your sweet helping hand
My loves too strong to hide

Always lived, very quiet life
I ain’t never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long

One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true

Always lived, very quiet life
I ain’t never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long

One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true

One

Song written by Kim Wilde. Third track of the album Wilde Winter Songbook.

Live performances

‘One’ was performed live during a concert in Saasveld (Netherlands) on 14 December 2013 only.

Kim about ‘One’

Last Christmas, via ‘Twitter’, I became aware of a new ‘Christmas’ album by Tracey Thorn called ‘Tinsel and Lights’. Having always been a fan of hers since the early 80’s in her post punk band ‘The Marine Girls’, and then after with Ben Watt in ‘Everything But the Girl’, I immediately got myself a copy. Tracey had written a beautiful new song called ‘Joy’, which I fell in love with. Completely inspired, I decided then and there that I too wanted to create my very own Christmas album. I sat down at my piano and wrote this song – the first song for the album – and then recreating the piano part at RAK Studios in front of my hugely talented band was a nerve-wracking experience. The beautiful and tender string arrangement by my drummer, Jonathan Atkinson, touches my heart every time I listen to it. (1)

Lyrics

Here we are on a winter’s day,
It’s colder than cold outside,
But warmer than warm we’ll stay.
Here in our hearts,
Where we’ve made our home
We’ll dress the tree,
Just you and me.

As, one by one,
Out from the box they’ll come
Shiny as new,
Memories of Christmases past we’ve been through,
Me and you
We are One.

Spring will come,
Summer just goes so fast,
Autumn the leaves will fall,
Another year will pass.
So let’s treasure each day like it was the last,
These symbols of joy, are more than just toys.

As, one by one,
Out from the box they’ll come,
Shiny as new,
Memories of Christmases past we’ve been through,
Me and you,
We are One.

Shining bright, oh what a beautiful sight,
On this winter’s night,
Let’s celebrate all the good things in our life,
Man and wife,
We are One.

Oh Mister Songwriter

Song written by Vic Reeves and Steve McGuire. It was released in 1991 on the B-side of the single ‘Born Free’ by Vic Reeves and the Roman Numerals.

Kim Wilde performed the song at the end of the New Year’s Eve programme Vic Reeves New Year’s Eve Big Night Out just after midnight on 1 January 1991.

Lyrics

Oh mister songwriter
Write me a song on your trumpet
Make it a good song
So that everyone in the world can sing along

Oh mister painter
Do us a picture with your brush
Make it easy on the eye
So the children of the world can live in peace

Oh mister carpenter
Knock us up a chair out of wood
Make it comfortable and attractive
So that the old people of the world can have a good sitdown

Oh mister weaver
Weave me a tapestry with your golden twine
Make it thick baby
So that the lovers all over the world can rest easy

Oh mister nutgatherer
Gather me some chestnuts from the wood
Lay them willynilly in the coalfield
So that the fire is easier done

Oh mister songwriter
Oh mister songwriter
Yes mister songwriter
Write me a song

Oh Lori

Song written by the twin brothers Billy and Bobby Alessi, who released it as a track on their debut album ‘Alessi’ in 1977. The single reached number 7 in the UK singles chart and was also a hit in several European countries.

Kim Wilde performed the song live together with Laurent Voulzy during the Night of the Proms concert in Charleroi on 25 April 2010.

Lyrics

I’d like to stay in love with you

All summer and after fall
I’ll keep you warm through the winter
Because I’ve noticed one thing
This ain’t no summer fling

I’d like to ride my bicycle with you
On the handlebars you’d laugh and run away
And I’d chase you through the meadow
Without you I’d die
Let’s never say goodbye

Oh, Laurent
You bring the spring, the summer, fall
Ooh and winter
By the season
Oh, Kim
You make me feel as though
I’ve been born again
Born again

Oh, Laurent
You bring the spring, the summer, fall
Ooh and winter
Oh, Kim
You make me feel as though
I’ve been born again
Born again

I’d like to stay in love with you

Oakfield School

Oakfield School is an independent coeducational preparatory school, situated in the outskirts of Dulwich Village, London (England). With over 500 boys and girls aged between 2 and 11, it is housed in historic Georgian buildings either side of the South Circular, and uses large play areas behind the main buildings, playing fields close by in Belair Park and the swimming facilities at Crystal Palace.

It takes advantage of its independent status to determine the nature, ethos and curriculum of the school, outside the control of central or local government. Its curriculum is broad and balanced, stressing the importance of sport, music, art and drama alongside academic subjects. Languages are taught from the youngest age.

Oakfield School has an inclusive admissions policy. Demand for places is very high, so a selection process is applied.

Notable alumni from the school are scientist and engineer Derek Abbott, actor/singer Michael Crawford and of course Kim. She didn’t enjoy this school at all.

Kim about Oakfield School

When I was seven and Ricky six, my parents had to put us both in a boarding school in Dulwich, London. They found themselves having to be away from home a lot at the time, and they thought it would be the best thing for us. It was awful. We hated it. We were so unhappy and miserable. The homesickness wasn’t just a mental thing, it was physical too. It made us ill.
Luckily, dad’s career really began to take off not long afterwards and he bought a lovely house in a little village in Hertfordshire and he and mum took us out of school after we’d been there two years. (1)

Ricky and I were sent to boarding school for a year when we were four and five because they needed time together. It didn’t do a lot for our confidence and caused a lot of unhappiness in our little minds. It was only after we moved to Hertfordshire, when I was eight, that our lives took off as a family. (2)

Oakenfold, Paul

Paul Oakenfold was born on 30 August 1963 in Greenhithe, Kent (UK). His music career started in the late Seventies, when he started playing soul music in a Covent Garden wine bar. In 1984 he spent several months in New York City, where he got acquainted with hip hop music.

In 1985 he celebrated his birthday by going to Ibiza for a week. Trevor Fung, Nicky Holloway, Ian Saint Paul, Danny Rampling and Johnny Walker accompanied him and it was during this time when playing at Amnesia that Oakenfold demonstrated the balearic trance sound that he would later become known for. By the end of the Eighties, Oakenfold had started Perfecto Records and had gotten into remixing tracks for Massive Attack and the Happy Mondays.

His biggest success came in 1992, when he remixed U2’s ‘Even Better Than the Real Thing’. This dance version of the track reached the chart in several countries. His career as a DJ and remixer has been very successful ever since.

In 2006, Oakenfold remixed Cambodia (based on new vocals sung by Kim) for her album Never Say Never.
