Las Cartas

Song written by Dominic James Miller and Gordon Sumner. Based on the song ‘Shape of My Heart’, recorded by Sting in 1993 on his album ‘Ten Summoner’s Tales’.

‘Las Cartas’ was arranged by Juan Vincente Abardonado and recorded by Chico & the Gypsies, featuring Kim Wilde on vocals. It was released on the albums ‘Chico & the Gypsies & International Friends’ and ‘Bamboleo: The Greatest Hits of All Time!’ in June 2014.

Lyrics

Él reparte las cartas como una meditando
A otro no sospechan
No riporta el dinero
Que gana tempo per respeto

He deals the cards to find the answers
A secret geometry of chance
A hidden law of a probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance

Espadas son unas armas de guerra
Nos bastos son para lucar
Y el oro significan di cesa
Signo es for ma vece

He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
Qui sa tendra un rey en la mano
Hasta lor vida no todo

I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that’s not the shape of my heart
That’s not the shape
The shape of my heart

Si te dijo que te quiero
Pensaras que algo no val
Yo soy un hombre di un solo lostro
No yo vo mascaran

But those who speak know nothin’
And find out to their cost
Like those who curse their luck in too many places
And those who fear are lost

Espadas son unas armas de guerra
Nos bastos son para lucar
Y el oro significan la cesa
Signo es forma vece
Esa no es y forma vece

Marty Wilde about ‘Christmas Fantasia’

It’s been such a tough year for everyone, and family and song are the two joys that I felt I could gift to people everywhere. After these isolating pandemic months, I felt it was time for me to step up and bring my own sprinkling of Christmas joy with ‘Christmas Fantasia’. It’s all there, sleigh bells, the festive message and the angelic voice of our beautiful daughter, Roxanne, who duets with me on this. You’ll hear the vocals of our little helper, Kim, on there too. Celebrating my 8 decades in music, I went back 80 years to when I was young, World War II restricted people back then, including the distribution of movies & live entertainment. As we face COVID restrictions, I saw a mirroring of now and then, and how the magical hope that Disney’s Fantasia brought to us all (despite WWII restrictions), was a symbol of hope and happiness. ‘Christmas Fantasia’ was conceived from that memory. Roxanne, Kim and I wanted to remind everyone that restricted times can still have pockets of magic, joy and music. That happiness and smiles can still be found, no matter what our hardships are. I’m delighted that my good pal, Brian Bennett, was able to help out on the production of this track. Happy Christmas everyone. (1)

Bad Boy

Song written by Marty Wilde.
Released as a single in 1959, this was Marty’s first officially released self-penned song. Marty confessed later that he wrote the song out of frustration, because there weren’t any suitable songs for him to record – his previous hits had all been cover versions of original American hit singles.

A mere 61 years after its original release, Kim performed the song together with Marty and her sister Roxanne on the show That Was Then… This Is Now!.

Cover versions

‘Bad Boy’ has been covered by Jef Barbara, Fabienne Delsol, Robert Gordon, Françoise Hardy, The Jaguars, Robin Luke, Tex Rubinowitz, The Staccatos and Freddie Starr.

Lyrics

All the people down the street, whoever you meet
Say I’m a bad boy, say I’m a bad boy
Say I’m a bad boy

Even dear old dad, when he gets mad
Says I’m a bad boy, says I’m a bad boy
Says I’m a bad boy

Well, you see now, I got a girl
And we stay out late, almost every night
Well, the people just stare and they declare
Well well, it just ain’t right

But if only they knew how I love you
They’d say a bad boy, could be a good boy
Who’s just in love

Well, you see now, I got a girl
And we stay out late, almost every night
Well, the people just stare and they declare
Well well, it just ain’t right

But if only they knew how I love you
They’d say a bad boy, could be a good boy
Who’s just in love
So much in love
So crazy in love
So much in love

Marty about ’60’s World’

’60’s World’ is my way of celebrating Joyce, the woman that I’ve loved, and who’s been the rock of our family, for 60 years. It’s 60 years since the start of the decade, 60 years we’ve been married and 60 years since our gorgeous Kim was born. Every day of my life has been special with Joyce and the family and I wanted to go back to 1960, where it all began. And what better way to celebrate than by bringing back the sound of the 60s with a modern twist. (1)

Lyrics

(Back in the 60’s baby)
That was the sound of the song I heard
Old memories were running free
They seem to follow me

They’re here again
They’re playing around with my feelings and then
I look for escape but I find
I’m locked in a 60’s world

And now just like before
Out of my head, somewhere on the floor
Old memories you’re haunting me
Oh won’t you let me be

You’re here again
You’re playing around with my feelings and then
I look for a door I can’t find
I’m locked in a 60’s world

Last night when dreams are softly spoken
I saw someone who once was me

I wanna go right back again
I wanna take you there
I wanna show you and then
I wanna take your hand
Put your hand in mine
Come on let’s go
Why don’t we go back again?

(Back in the 60’s baby)
That was the sound of the song I heard
Old memories you’re haunting me
You gotta set me free

You’re here again
You’re playing around with my feelings and then
I look for escape I can’t find
I’m locked in a 60’s world

These were the sounds and the songs I’m singing
Thinking of joy and the love they’re bringing
Crazy days, best of times
It was a better world
The place to be

I’m going back to live in the 60’s world…

Rescue Me

Song written by Raynard Miner, Carl Smith and Fontella Bass. They were fooling around with the song when arranger Phil Wright walked in, and the ensuing four-way jam session brought forth ‘Rescue Me’. Bass claimed that, although Smith, Miner and Davis had assured her that her contribution to authorship of the song’s lyrics would be acknowledged, this was never done.

Fontella Bass recorded the song in three takes at Chess Studios in Chicago. Minnie Riperton provided background vocals, and Maurice White and Louis Satterfield, later of Earth, Wind & Fire, were on drums and bass respectively. Other musicians on the record included Pete Cosey and Gerald Sims on guitar, Leonard Caston (later a producer at Motown) on piano, Sonny Thompson on organ, and Charles Stepney on vibes.

After its release as a single, it peaked at number 4 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and number 11 in the UK singles chart.

Kim Wilde performed the song together with Roy Wood and his Big Band in December 1994 – once during a concert at the Society of Distinguished Songwriters (3 December) and once during a concert at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham (16 December). No recordings of these performances are known to exist.

Lyrics

Rescue me
Take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charm
‘Cause I’m lonely
And I’m blue
I need you
And your love too
Come on and rescue me

Come on, baby, and rescue me
Come on, baby, and rescue me
‘Cause I need you by my side
Can’t you see that I’m lonely

Rescue me
Come on and take my heart
Take your love and conquer every part
‘Cause I’m lonely
And I’m blue
I need you
And your love too
Come on and rescue me

Come on, baby, and rescue me
Come on, baby, and rescue me
‘Cause I need you by my side
Can’t you see that I’m lonely

Rescue me
Take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charm
‘Cause I’m lonely
And I’m blue
I need you
And your love too
Come on and rescue me (come on baby)
Take me baby (take me baby)
Hold me baby (hold me baby)
Love me baby (love me baby)
Can’t you see that I’m lonely

Rescue me
Come on and take my hand
Come on baby and be my friend
‘Cause I love you
‘Cause I want you
Can’t you see that I’m lonely

Take me baby (take me baby)
Love me baby (love me baby)
Need me baby (need me baby)
Can’t you see that I’m lonely

Numinous

Song written by Kim and Ricky Wilde.
It was recorded during sessions for the album Here Come the Aliens and was released as a music video on 14 May 2020. The song starts with a quote from Christopher Hitchens (spoken by Hal Fowler) and at the end samples the melody of the song Stay Awhile.

Parts of the song can be heard in the intro of the song 1969.

Kim about ‘Numinous’

I was phoning up Sean, when they were literally putting [‘Pop Don’t Stop’, the greatest hits album] to bed, I said ‘Numinous is on there, isn’t it?’ and he said ‘Er, don’t think so’. I said ‘well, I want it on there’. (…) I literally snuck ‘Numinous’ on, because I thought ‘I’m not gonna tell Rick!’ (1)

Ricky about ‘Numinous’

I didn’t really hear it as a Kim Wilde track. I programmed it all and wrote it as a, maybe a remix or something. It had a Basement Jaxx kindof vibe to it, I suppose, and that was the main influence behind it and I didn’t really hear it as a song. As a track, it’s more of a remix I think. (2)

Lyrics

“The sense that there’s something beyond the material, or if not beyond it, not entirely consistent materially with it, is, I think, a very important matter.
What you could call the numinous or the transcendant, or at its best, I suppose, the ecstatic.”

Unbelievable
Supernatural

There’s a real phenomenon beyond our comprehension
A super energy in a mystic third dimension
Whatever faith, belief, religion that you hold
There’s so much more to life on this world than we’re told

Unbelievable
Supernatural

Now I feel connected to the world and the universe all around me
I’m elevated with the truth and the revelation astounds me
Whatever faith, belief, religion that you hold
There’s so much more to life on this world than we’re told

Numinous, numinous, numinous, numinous
Numinous, numinous, numinous, numinous

This surreal phenomenon will blow your mind away

Rain On

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde.
Recorded in August/September 1983, this song was a new version of Sail On with different lyrics. It remained unreleased until 2020 when it was included in the deluxe edition of Catch as Catch Can.

Lyrics

I watch it raining
Tapping down upon my window pane
I hate the weatherman
It’s always the same

I’m looking for the one in my life
But I guess I’ll see those clouds again tonight

So rain on, rainy day
It really doesn’t matter if the sky’s looking grey
Rain on, let it pour
You know I’m only waiting ’till the clouds roll away
Once more

I heard you’re leaving
Say goodbye and let me drift away
No way I’m coming back
You know I won’t stay

You’ve taken all the sun from my life
And I guess I’ll be alone again tonight

So rain on, rainy day
It really doesn’t matter if the sky’s looking grey
Rain on, let it pour
You know I’m only waiting ’til the clouds roll away
Once more

You took away the sun from my life
And I guess I’ll be alone again tonight

So rain on, rainy day
It really doesn’t matter if the sky’s looking grey
Rain on, let it pour
You know I’m only waiting ’til the clouds roll away…
Ooh, once more
Ooh ooh ooh, once more
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh
Ooh ooh ooh, once more

Sail On

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde.
Recorded in May/June 1983, this song was not released until 2020 when it was included in the deluxe edition of Catch as Catch Can.
The song was later re-recorded as Rain On.

Lyrics

Goodbye to summer
There you go, you never were my friend
Goodbye to nights alone
When there was no end

I’m standing on the edge of my life
When I thought I could see the lights at home tonight

So sail on, sail away
I don’t know where I’m going but I’m out in the bay
Sail on, take me home
You know I’m only waiting ’till I get you alone
Once more

Don’t say I’m leaving
Wave goodbye and let me drift away
Don’t brush my lips with yours
You know I can’t stay

We’re shadows on the edge of the light
But you know I’ll be on my way alone tonight

So sail on, sail away
I don’t know where I’m going but I’m out in the bay
Sail on, take me home
You know I’m only waiting ’till I get you alone
Once more

I’m standing on the edge of my life
But I think I can see the lights at home tonight

So sail on, sail away
I don’t know where I’m going but I’m out in the bay
Sail on, take me home
You know I’m only waiting ’till I get you alone…
Ooh, once more
Ooh ooh ooh, once more
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh

He Will Be There

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde.
Recorded in 1981 or 1982, this song was not released until 2020 when it was included in the deluxe edition of Select.

Lyrics

Seven o’clock and he’s late
Nevertheless, I guess I’ll wait
He will be there
He will be there

Under a rainy sky
Millions of faces just pass me by
But I don’t care
He will be there

He will be there
I know he won’t let me down
He’s not the kind of boy
Who’d leave a girl to hang around

Maybe there’s something wrong
Maybe his work just took too long
He will be there
He will be there

He will be there
He makes dreams seem possible
And when he held me tight
He promised me we’d meet tonight

Oh darling, remember
Please don’t let me down
I stayed with you last night
You made it feel so right, so right, hey

Freezing with cold and it’s late
I look at the time and I hesitate
Does he still care?
Will he be there?

Oh, please be there
Didn’t think you’d let me down
You’re not the kind of boy
Who’d leave a girl to hang around

Oh, please be there,
Feel so sad, I want to cry
If he don’t come on time,
I still believe he will be there

Oh darling, you promised,  don’t let me down
(He will be there)
Oh darling, you promised, don’t let me down
(He will be there)
Oh darling, you promised, don’t let me down
(He will be there)
(He will be there)

Price of Love (the)

Song written by Don and Phil Everly and recorded by the Everly Brothers (as they were known) in 1965. It reached number 2 in the UK singles chart and number 3 in Ireland. The song was subsequently covered by Status Quo, Bryan Ferry, The Levellers and Marianne Faithfull, among others.

During the 70th birthday celebration concert of Albert Lee at Cadogan Hall in London, he was joined on stage by Marty, Kim and Roxanne Wilde to perform this song together. Their performance was included on the DVD Albert Lee 70th birthday celebration, released in September 2015.

Kim about The Price of Love

The Everly Brothers and ‘The Price of Love’, and that’s the song I’m gonna be singing with my dad Marty Wilde and my sister Roxy at the Cardogan Hall, and it’s part of a weekend of tributed to the Grammy awardwinning country rock guitarist Albert Lee, and he’s celebrating his 70th birtdhay. You’re talking about the man who worked for 20 years with the Everly Brothers – which is one of the reasons my dad decided to do that particular song – but he has worked with absolutely everyone who’s anyone in the music world over many, many years and I’m very, very proud to be meeting him tonight and singing on the stage to celebrate his birthday. (Secret Songs, Magic 105.4, 2 March 2014)

My Coo Ca Choo

Song written, sung, and recorded by Peter Shelley, using the glam rock name Alvin Stardust. Although he had already appeared as the original Alvin Stardust on the Lift Off television programme, Shelley was surprised when the record went straight into the chart the following week. As he had no desire to become his own stage name creation, a “face” was required to be, and perform as, Alvin Stardust. Marty Wilde was asked, but he declined. The ideal person appeared in the shape of Shane Fenton. The new ‘Stardust’ then appeared on BBC Television’s Top of the Pops just as the record had entered the UK Top 30, before finally reaching number 2. It was kept from the top of the UK charts by Gary Glitter’s ‘I Love You Love Me Love’. Shelley then followed up with a string of hits for Stardust.

During the radio programme ‘Jammin”, broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on 31 August 2006, Kim sung part of this song as part of a music quiz.

Lyrics

Coo! Coo! I just want you
I really love the things that you do
Come on and love-a-me too
Won’t you be my coo ca choo

Love you
Yes I love ya
Yes I love my coo ca choo
Yes I, I really do want you
