Lyrics

Hello, hello, hello again
The strangest feelings touch my heart
It didn’t cross my mind we’d meet again
We’d taken roads so far apart – but…

Just when we thought it was goodbye

Hello Hello Hello again
The memories drift out of time
The face I used to kiss a million ways
The love I truly thought was mine
I guess we just forgot to talk about it
And so we took the exit sign – but…

Just when we thought it was goodbye

Hello Hello Hello my love again
We make it seem like our first time
I want to stay inside your life again
To fall apart just seems a crime
And when we thought we’d closed the shutters down
And we had nowhere left to start – but…

Just when we thought it was goodbye

Kim about ‘The touch’

Some of those videos really embarrass me. Some of them don’t embarrass me but some of them do, like ‘The Second Time’, me dressed as a ridiculous woman with a white wig on, and then which other one do I cringe at, oh yeah, ‘The Touch’, but you didn’t show the embarrassing bits of ‘The touch’ but oh my God, that was an atrocious video. Lyrics

Funny what fate can bring you
And the things that it can do
Funny how life can change you
When you least expect it do

I wasn’t into anyone
I danced in a sea of faces
I wasn’t into anything
But baby you know
Together we’re…

So right
The touch that I get from you’s incredible
So right
The touch that I get
When I look at you

Maybe the touch you give me
Is the look I get from you
Maybe the spell it’s weaving
Is the way you feel it too

Maybe you’ll stop and walk away
Don’t look at me to follow
I wouldn’t run for anyone
But baby you know
Together we’re …

So right
The touch that I get from you’s incredible
So right
The touch that I get
That I get from you

Whatever it is we’ve got
Well maybe we could find out more about it
Baby we’ll create this feeling
Anytime, anytime

I wasn’t into anyone
I danced in a sea of faces
I wasn’t into anything
But baby you know
Together we’re …

So right
The touch that I get from you’s incredible
So right
The touch that I get
When I look at you

Cover versions

‘The second time’ has been covered by Lynn Sweet. The song was also covered in Croatian as ‘Drugo Vrijeme’ by Elvira Voća.

Kim about ‘The Second Time’

I suppose the lyrics were explicit, but we didn’t really make a big deal about the lyrics. I think it’s really funny. I like the paradox of pop music – that’s what attracted me to it. At one extreme it can be so serious and mean so much and at the other end it can be so trivial. There’s somewhere between the two where you don’t know if you’re listening to something that is really serious or tongue-in-cheek.
‘The Second Time’ was very sexually explicit and that’s totally alien to me. I never talk about sex to the press – I never tell them who I’m going out with. I’m never associated with that side of things. As far as the public is concerned, from what I can make out, I come across as a ‘nice girl’. So I quite like the fact that I was up there singing a song that was more sexually explicit than “Relax” and getting away with it. That’s what I like about the pop business. it can be very silly. (1)

I felt the Second Time project worked well sometimes, but mostly was an embarrassment. At the time my career was at its lowest, my confidence to trust my instincts, impaired. I knew something wasn’t right, but I felt I should give the project a fair shot. Unfortunately it reflected badly on an album I’m very proud of – Teases and Dares. (2)

Some of those videos really embarrass me. Some of them don’t but some of them do, like ‘The Second Time’. Dressed up like a ridiculous woman with a wet wig on. (3)

Lyrics

Go go

Don’t wanna know about vacations in this cheap motel
Don’t wanna know about your sea green curtains
Cos all I want ‘n’ all I need is just some time with you
Don’t complicate it – Just do it once again

Just go for it
Just go for the second time
Just go for it, just go – just go

Don’t wanna hear about the time and how it’s gettin’ late
How can you stop when I could go for hours
You need some magic; come on let me lean on you
Don’t look around – you’re not goin’ anywhere

Just go for it
Just go for the second time
Just go for it, just go – just go for it

‘cos all I need
And all I need
‘Cos all I want ‘n’ all I need

I’m never letting go – baby don’t expect me to
How can you stop when my whole world’s exploding (go)
Look in the mirrors – and see the heat of something new
Why don’t we do it – just do it once again

Just go for it
Just go for the second time
Just go for it, just go – just go for it

Don’t be so nervous
Don’t get so hot
Don’t start to fumble it up
‘Cos all I want ‘n’ all I need

There’s such an urgency in everything I need from you
Stop giving up – you know you can’t refuse me (go)
I’ve every reason to believe there’s still a man in you
You done it once so come on go again

Just go for it
Just go for the second time
Just go for it, just go
Just go for it, just go…

Teases & Dares

Released on 12 November 1984, ‘Teases & Dares’ is Kim Wilde’s fourth studio album. After signing to MCA Records in the summer of 1984, this was her first album for that label.

Music

Ricky and Marty Wilde wrote eight out of ten tracks from the album. Kim co-wrote ‘Thought It Was Goodbye’ with them and also contributed two self-penned tracks, ‘Fit In’ and ‘Shangri-La’.
The music was still very synth-based, but occasionally relied more on a traditional rock backing, such as on the tracks ‘Rage to Love’ and ‘Janine’.

Tracks

This album contains the tracks The Touch, Is It Over, Suburbs of Moscow, Fit In, Rage to Love, The Second Time, Bladerunner, Janine, Shangri-La, Thought It Was Goodbye.

Artwork

The sleeve artwork, designed by XL design featured a new Kim Wilde, fit into an image often compared with the comic strip and film character Barbarella. Kim has commented that this image worked well at first but soon became a drag.
The photography was done by John Shaw.

Formats

‘Teases & dares’ was originally released on LP and tape. The album was released on cd in 1985.
The German pressing of the cd is notable for its apparent ‘cd rot’: towards the end of the fourth track you can see a miniscule hole in the disc. So far, there have been no reports that this affects play of the disc.

Kim about ‘Teases & dares’

Can you give an example of something going wrong?
There are many! I’ll confine myself to the sleeve of my previous album. We started working with a creative group of people. A very freaky video had been made and during the filming some photographs were made as well. It looked beautiful, strange and wild. Then I got back from travelling abroad and one of these strange photographs were placed on the sleeve of the album. It didn’t fit the atmosphere of the album at all. I went to the responsible person in a fit of anger. You know what you get to hear then? ‘It’s tough Kim. You either approve of this photograph or we delay the release for three months.’ Well, what to do then? But although I like a good sleeve and presentation, such a failure isn’t the end of the world. But in the future I will be more attentive. (1)

‘Teases & dares’ is a line from Fit in. It was chosen as the title, because it seemed to relate vaguely to what pop music is all about, teasing & daring. I also think it sounds good!

Suburbs of Moscow

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde. Third track of the album Teases & Dares. The lyrics were written by Marty, who apparently visited the Russian city and was rather impressed by the moody atmosphere.

Live performances

‘Suburbs of Moscow’ was performed live during the Rage to Rock Tour in 1985, the German tour in December 1992 and the Hits Tour in 1994.

Kim about ‘Suburbs of Moscow’

It’s about the life of young people in Eastern Europe, being in a cultural conflict on a daily basis. They are living with a dictatorial regime, which doesn’t leave any space for their personal development, but the jeans they wear show a bond with the Western world. (1)

Lyrics

Out on my own
In the suburbs of Moscow
Out in the rain
Walking down this long avenue

Out to the crowds in the square
Feelings are high everywhere

But the feeling is gone
And I can’t break away
(Living in Moscow)
Out in the cold
(So cold)
When there’s nowhere to stay

Look at the girl
Gazing through the window
Clutching her books
Memorising every line

Keep your belief at the start
This was the faith in my heart

But the feeling is gone
And I can’t break away
(Living in Moscow)
Out in the cold
(So cold)
When there’s nowhere to stay

Where can we go
In the suburbs of Moscow
Watching the rain
Beating down empty streets

Yes, the feeling is gone
And I can’t break away
(Living in Moscow)
Out in the cold
(So cold)
When there’s nowhere to stay

Shangri-La

Song written by Kim Wilde. Ninth track of the album Teases & Dares. Along with Fit In this was one of the first two songs that were released, written by Kim Wilde herself. Not too confident about her songwriting abilities, she apparently had been writing two years before releasing her first two own compositions.

Versions

There are four versions of ‘Shangri-la’: the album version, the 7″ version (released as the B-side of The Touch), the extended version and a special remix featured on the LP Debut.

Live performances

‘Shangri-la’ was performed live during the Rage to Rock tour in 1985 only.

Kim about ‘Shangri-la’

‘Shangrila’ is a typical British expression of a paradise condition, which everyone is searching for in life. What belongs in that, is different for everyone – which is why this lyric is poetic, leaves lots of things open. (1)

Lyrics

Hidden away – It’s the end of a day
And you’re not really thinking at all
There’s that same stupid paper on the wall
And a stain where the damp’s crawling

He’s still looking for his Shangri-la
But he wouldn’t know it
if it hit him in the face
if it hit him in the face

Day turns to daze
And indifference plays
While a sun goes on beating in the sky
And a small child falls over as she crys
Somewhere someone is calling her

She’s still looking for her Shangri-la
But she wouldn’t know it
if it hit her in the face
if it hit her in the face

Spoken : I take a look behind me
And the sun shines brighter there
And the people are much more beautiful
In a place without a care
And I’m wondering if there’ll ever be room for me
in Shangri-la

Wondering now – do you love me – and now
As I burn with a dangerous desire
Is our time up and on to the next fire
Got my fingers burnt and cut into the wire
Do you think we will ever learn

He’s still looking for his Shangri-la
But he wouldn’t know it
if it hit him in the face
if it hit him in the face

As we keep looking our Shangri-la…
Our Shangri-la
But we wouldn’t know it
if it hit us in the face
if it hit us in the face

Lyrics

Janine – what’s going on
Janine – I know that something sure is wrong
there’s lights out on the road
And they’re searchin’ for you

Janine – life wasn’t fair
Janine – when you got home and no-one cared
But running from your life
You let the vultures get through
And they feed on you, they feed on you

So what you gonna do when the lights burn out Janine
What you gonna do when your light burns out

Janine – you want the truth
Janine – you’ll find the pressure’s now on you
You wanted all the world
But they’ve taken it all
And they’re bleeding you, they’re bleeding you

So, what you gonna do when the lights burn out Janine
What you gonna do when your light burns out

Heh Kid, don’t hesitate
Don’t stick around now
I bet you can hardly wait
Oh what a time I’ll give to you
But it’s never true

Janine – you’ll soon be there
Janine – you’re on a wing and a prayer
But Angels love their own
And they’re reaching out for you

Janine… Oh Janine

Is It Over

Lyrics

Well there’s a rumour out
Have you heard anything ?
And if you ask me now
Will I answer your question ?
In your eyes – I could hear you

Is it over
Is it over (or has it just begun)
Is it over
Is it over (or has it just begun)

You never thought it would get to this
And now you’re sick with love
Do you think I can heal you
In my mind – I still hear you

Is it over (or has it just begun)
Is it over
Is it over (or has it just begun)

If I thought I was part of you
I would beg you to stay
But I can’t live my time in this world
With the felling this way

Is it over (or has it just begun)
Is it over
Is it over (or has it just begun)

And so you ask me now
Have you done anything
And when you’re reaching out
Do I still wanna hold you
In my mind – I can hear you

Is it over (or has it just begun)
Is it over
Is it over (or has it just begun)
Is it over

Go For It

American alternative name for the song The Second Time. It was released simultaneously in Europe and the USA to forge Kim Wilde’s big comeback in America.

Fit In

Song written by Kim Wilde. Fourth track of the album Teases & Dares. Along with Shangri-La this was one of the first two self-penned songs that were released. Not too confident about her own songwriting abilities at first, she apparently had been writing two years before releasing her first two own compositions.

Live performances

‘Fit in’ was performed live during the Rage to Rock Tour in 1985 only.

Kim about Fit In

‘Fit in’ was inspired by my neighbours banging on the ceiling when I was playing a Frankie Goes to Hollywood 12 inch single!!!!! (1)

‘Fit in’ is very concrete. I describe the irritation I had with my neighbours in my appartment in London. In the beginning we got along great, they always knocked on my door. In the beginning I thought they wanted my autograph, but the opposite was true: they were angry because I made too much noise with my music, while friends came late and night and left early in the morning. I believe everyone who lives alone for the first time goes through this kind of thing. (2)

Lyrics

Fit in, fit in

I’m spending nights just dreaming
And playing the music loud
They’re banging on the ceiling
They’re praying that I’ll soon be out
I almost thought of leaving
Get away from the glares and their unfriendly stares
And now I’m all alone
And the telephone teases and dares

I’ll get away from them all (oh oh)
So pride comes before a fall
But I’m not for giving in
Fit in, Fit in

They’re kicking up a storm in …
Some strange place they know out of town
Why won’t I go along there
It’s crazy they’re all doing it now
But right now it’s the last place
That I wanna see – It’s my way to be free
And I’m getting bored
Of the way they expect me to be

You gotta be, you gotta be

I’ll get away from them all (oh oh)
So pride comes before a fall
But I’m not for giving in
Fit in, Fit in
Fit in, fit in

I’m holding on so tightly
But I don’t want to take any more
‘cos what they say just bites me
And gets to me down to the core
A ring and kids invite me
Or a house and a home
And a car and a phone
And a video
Won’t they ever leave it alone
You gotta ring, you gotta ring

I’ll get away from them all (oh oh)
So pride comes before a fall
But I’m not for giving in

I won’t fit in, fit in
I don’t fit in, fit in
I don’t fit in, fit in
I don’t fit in, fit in
Oh no, I don’t fit in, fit in

Bladerunner

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde.
Seventh track of the album Teases & Dares. Inspired by the movie Bladerunner, the track contains a few samples from that film.

There are two versions of ‘Bladerunner’: the album version and a live version recorded in Hamburg and released on the album Aliens Live.

Live performances

‘Bladerunner’ was performed live during the Rage To Rock Tour in 1985 and during the Here Come the Aliens tour and during the Return of the Aliens Tour.

Lyrics

(“Mother?”)
(“Mother?”)

Well as the city nights grow cold
The lights jump through the shutters
And a thousand echos fill the streets
And bounce along the dirty gutters

(Out there)
I know that he’s waiting for me
(Somewhere)
I know that he’s waiting there for me

I watched her falling to the ground
And saw the glass go flying
And inside her mind the fuse blew out
But deep inside a voice was crying

(Out there)
I know that he’s waiting for me
(Somewhere)
I know that he’s waiting there

Look out for the Bladerunner
I thought I heard him calling you

And now a silence fills the room
I feel my heart start beating
‘cos inside the shadows there he stands
He’s waiting on our final meeting

(Out there)
I know that he’d waited for me
(Somewhere)
I know that he’d waited there for me
