Kim about ‘You’re My Karma’

Because of the nature of the lockdown, everyone was in such a different place, it was so scary and unpredictable and we just didn’t know what was around the corner, we just didn’t know what the hell was going on. I think Rick at that point was thinking about doing maybe a solo project or something. So he was putting together some great tracks. When I heard ‘You’re My Karma’ I thought ‘this is a song that needs to be heard’. When the greatest hits project was winding up, and we knew Shine On was on there, I thought ‘wouldn’t it be great if we had two new songs?’ (…) We did ‘Shine On’ with George, and I thought ‘You’re My Karma’ would be the perfect track to put on there, by which time we had met Tom Aspaul. Lyrics

You are the summer
You’re my karma, my love
You are the summer
You’re the summer of love (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Your longer days are starting to burn
It’s like I’ve always wanted you
But in this moment, my world, as it turns
Is a cold and lonely place
Have I seen your face before?
‘Cause it feels like karma to me
Give it up, I’m in love (I wanna be forever)
In your life like a circle (we are bound together)
No mistake, love is fake (it’s never who we are)
Like the earth to the sun (I’ll be with you, my heaven)
You are the summer
You’re my karma, my love (yeah, yeah)
You are the summer
You’re the summer of love (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Whatever you give and I just want more
That has always been my downfall
This time I’m leaving my pride at the door
Can it be so hard to take?
Have you seen my face before?
Does it feel like karma?
Give it up, I’m in love (I wanna be forever)
In your life like a circle (we are bound together)
No mistake, love is fake (it’s never who we are)
Like the earth to the sun (I’ll be with you, my heaven)
You are the summer
You’re my karma, my love (yeah, yeah)
You are the summer
You’re the summer of love (yeah, yeah)
Give it up, that’s enough, ’cause you won’t last forever
Come around like a circle, we are bound together
No mistake, love is fake, we can be who we are
Like the earth to the sun, this feelings are made in heaven
I’m blinded by your light, you’re the one
I’ll be with you, my heaven
You are the summer
You’re my karma, my love
Yeah, you are the summer
You’re the summer of love (I’ll be with you, my heaven)
I’m blinded by your light
You’re the one, you’re the one (I’ll be with you, my heaven)
I’m blinded by your light
You’re the one, you’re the one (I’ll be with you, my heaven)
You are the summer, you’re my karma, my love

You Don’t Love Me

Song written by Lemar Obika, based partly on, and featuring samples from Kim Wilde’s version of You Keep Me Hangin’ On.

Released in 2010 on the compilation album ‘The Hits’ by Lemar, it was one of three new songs on the album. According to Lemar, the song was an attempt to show a different side of his singing: “So with ‘You Don’t Love Me’ – as opposed to it being your standard love song where you’re hearing me crooning about someone – I’m taking another stance and saying ‘You keep accusing me, but you’re the person who doesn’t love me‘… You know, I’m trying a different approach, and there is that bit of anger in m voice. Which is something people really haven’t heard too much of from me before.”

Lyrics

Set me free why don’t you babe
Get out my life why don’t you babe
Cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hanging on

No
You don’t really love me
You don’t really love me, its so plain to see
Oh
Trying to pin it on me
That you don’t really love me (love me)
No no no

I saw you leaving
I saw you get in his car
I followed you home
I know exactly where you are
You’re so decieving
See I would never have known
You got your candy coded kisses lead me far from the truth
Oh

Stop telling the world he treated me so bad
When you’re the one that (keeps me hanging on)
Aaah
Should have ended this so long ago
It’s a one way road
Still you (keep me hanging on)
Hey Hey

Set me free why don’t you babe (hey, hey, hey)
Get out my life why don’t you babe
Cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hanging on

No
You don’t really love me
You don’t really love me, its so plain to see
Oh
Trying to pin it on me
That you don’t really love me
No no no

Passion burnin’
We’re going at it again
We’re so bad for each other but the record don’t change
I should hate ya, but I can’t help myself
You got the key to my soul
Girl I’m under your spell
Oh

Stop telling the world he treated me so bad
When you’re the one that (keep me hanging on)
Oh
Should have ended this so long ago
It’s a one way road
Still you (keep me hanging on)
Hey Hey

Set me free why don’t you babe (hey, hey, hey)
Get out my life why don’t you babe
Cause you don’t really love me
You just keep me hanging on

No
You don’t really love me
You don’t really love me, its so plain to see
Oh
Trying to pin it on me
That you don’t really love me, love me
No no no no no

Keep me hanging on
You don’t really love me
Love me, love me
Keep me hanging on

Set me free why don’t you babe (set me free babe why don’t you babe)
Get out my life why don’t you babe (get out my life why don’t you babe)
Cause you don’t really love me (cause you don’t really love me)
You just keep me hanging on (no no no)

No
You don’t really love me
You don’t really love me, its so plain to see
Oh
Trying to pin it on me
That you don’t really love me, love me
No no no

Lyrics

Seems you’re living in a dream,
And I know there’s no end.
And I can never find the time,
Come to terms with a lie.
Grab your life with open hands,
Take it all if you dare.
I wish that I could be like you,
Take control, and you’re there.

But I never knew,
Your love was there for the taking,
So I’m coming thru,
And you know I’ll always be there.
You gave me a sign,
And now I’m addicted forever,
You’ll never be mine..
But my heart is yours til the end.

Show me everything you’ve learned,
hidden truth.. it will burn.
I am yours do what you will,
I am lost in your spell.
You will never understand,
Now my life’s in your hands…

There’s no end, take it all if you dare.
There’s no end, take it all if you dare.

Your Mistake

Song written by Phil Thornalley & Mike Nocito. Kim Wilde performed backing vocals on this song by Johnny Hates Jazz, which appears on their second album ‘Tall Stories’, released in 1991.

Lyrics

Hello again
I guess you’re in trouble
You pretend that nothing’s wrong
You call me up
When you’ve got a problem
Silence when the problems gone

You think I’m so easy
But you’re never further from the truth
Every time it rings
I know it’s you

There’s nothing left to say
This torch has burned away
You took too long I could not wait
I do believe there’s nothing left to say

All your life
So much attention
A camera flash and you turn your head
I’ll tell you now
Would it make any difference
You never listened to a word I said

Always there when you need me
But you’re never here when I need you
I can’t be your friend
‘cos I want to be your fool

There’s nothing left to say
This ship has long since sailed away
I picked up my pride and I’m on my way
I believe there’s nothing left to say
Except – It’s your mistake
It’s your mistake

Young, Russell

Russell Young (British, born in 1959) was born in Northern England and spent his first few months in foster care. He was adopted by Ken and Lesley Young when he was four months old. The family moved further north. As a child, Young considered his world to be dark, and he developed a fascination with American culture. He disliked school and often skipped class. He enjoyed punk music and watching soccer matches. Young attended Chester Art College where he studied photography, film, and graphic design.

After his parents divorced, the young artist attended Exeter Art College before moving to London. Young was unable to find work and lived on the streets, where he met photographer Christos Raftopoulos (Australian, b.1940) and became his assistant. Raftopoulos encouraged his assistant to branch out on his own. Young began his career by photographing live punk shows. His photographs were well-received, and he began landing work for magazines and record companies.

In 1986, he was hired to shoot the cover of the Faith album for pop star George Michael. More photography work followed and in 1988, he did a photo session with Kim Wilde, which resulted in cover photographs for the album Close and the singles Hey Mister Heartache, You Came and Never Trust a Stranger.

He traveled to America and photographed many celebrities including Bruce Springsteen, Bjork, Paul Newman, and Diana Ross. He transitioned into television and shot over 100 videos for MTV. In 1992, the artist moved to Hollywood where he met actress Finola Hughes. The couple married that same year. Young decided it was time to branch out, and so began to paint. Young moved to New York with his wife, and became frustrated as an artist. He spent time in Tuscany, Italy, where he practiced meditation. Young then moved to Brooklyn and developed a new technique that combined painting and photography. He produced a series of works which became known as Big Portraits. The series featured large photographs which were enhanced with acrylic paint and diamond dust, featuring legendary stars like Marilyn Monroe and Sid Vicious.

Young remains married and resides with his wife and children in New York, where he continues to work.

Young, Paul

Born on 17 January 1956 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. Paul Young was a member of the Streetband, who made the UK charts with the novelty record “Toast”. He was then part of the band Q Tips, a band that did much to preserve an interest in ’60s soul and R&B. As Q Tips collapsed from exhaustion and lack of finance, Young signed as a solo artist with CBS.

His initial offerings flopped, but his third single ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’, a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic, topped the charts in numerous countries.
The album ‘No parlez’ was a triumphant debut, reaching number 1 in the UK and staying in the charts for well over two years. It was a blend of carefully chosen and brilliantly interpreted covers including ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ (Joy Division) and ‘Love of the Common People’ (Nicky Thomas) together with excellent originals like ‘Come Back And Stay’. After touring to support the album, Young experienced a recurring problem with his voice, which continued to plague his career. It was two years before he was able to record ‘The Secret of Association’, but it was as successful as his previous album.
It produced three top 10 singles including ‘Everything must change’ and a cover of Daryl Hall’s ‘Every Time You Go Away’. He appeared at Live Aid, duetting with Alison Moyet, although it was obvious that his voice was once again troublesome.

‘Between Two Fires’ set in the decline of Paul’s popularity. Little was heard from Young for over a year, and while it was assumed that his voice was continuing to cause him problems, Young was merely re-assessing his life. He made an encouraging return singing Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ at the Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley in 1988 after which Young went into hibernation until 1990. In that year he returned with the album ‘Other voices’ and an accompanying tour. Once again his choice of material was tasteful and included versions of ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, Free’s ‘Little Bit of Love’ and Bobby Womack’s ‘Stop On By’.

Subsequent albums weren’t as successful but did satisfy his loyal group of fans. Meanwhile, a ‘side project’ was started in the 1990’s. Paul joined a band ‘Los Pacaminos’, specialized in Tex-mex music.

In November 2001 and December 2003 he appeared with Kim Wilde in the Here and Now Tour in the UK, and in November 2003 in Australia.

Young Knives

The Young Knives were founded by Henry Dartnall, Thomas Dartnall and Oliver Askew in 1998. They broke into the music industry in 2002 with the release of their debut mini-album ‘The Young Knives… Are Dead’, but began to gain recognition when they released the single ‘The decision’ in 2005. In 2006 they released their first proper album ‘Voices of animals and men’, which peaked at number 21 in the UK album charts. Also in 2006, they recorded a cover version of Kim Wilde’s Kids in America, which received a rather limited distribution, as it was only released on a bonus 7″ single with the LP version of ‘Voices of animals and men’. The track was also included on a CD sampler included with NME magazine in November 2006, which remains the track’s only release on CD.

Since then, they’ve released three more albums, with the latest one, ‘Sick octave’ (2013) being funded from a Kickstarter campaign.

Young Heroes

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde. Fourth track of the album Kim Wilde. The track was also included in the soundtrack of the movie She Come from the Woods (2023).

Formats

The track was released as a 7″ single in Peru and a flexi disc in Russia.
See also this page in the discography.

Live performances

‘Young heroes’ was performed live during the Rage to Rock Tour in 1985.

Cover versions

This track was covered by the cast of the television series Fame.

Marty about ‘Young heroes’

‘Young heroes’ was written specifically again for young people. It’s a kind of light rebellious song. The kids today are like the kids of any young generation: they are the young heroes and we think the song explains that. We had a few problems with Kim’s vocals because the actual melody line on it is such that in some parts it is very, very high and in others it’s very, very low.

Lyrics

Everyone round keeps putting us down, let it go
It’s the same old play in a grown up day
It’s a stinging sensation
Hanging round on every corner
Where, all the young kids I know want to be

We only wanna stay young, we only wanna be free
He doesn’t wanna be you, she doesn’t wanna be me
We’re all young heroes
We’re all young heroes

Shouted down pushed and we’re gettin’ real bushed
Just have your say and we’ll do it your way
If it makes you fell better
Nothing much to add to what I say
’cause I know just how it fells to be

We only wanna stay young, we only wanna be free
He doesn’t wanna be you, she doesn’t wanna be me
We’re all young heroes
We’re all young heroes

We only wanna be free

You’re All I Wanna Do

Song written by A. Roman & Peter Zizzo. The eleventh track of the album Now & Forever.

Kim about ‘You’re All I Wanna Do’

Kim: Peter Zizzo, a co-writer of this song, played it to me in New York and I was blown away. I love the innocence of the lyric and melody. A classic soul/pop record.

Lyrics

Cos you’re all I really wanna do
I only want to be with you
Cos you blow my mind
Wanna share you love
Till the end of the time
Cos you’re all my wishes coming true
Nothings compares to you
You’re all I wanna do

You call up on the telephone
Say “Come over, nobody’s home”
And it doesn’t really matter where I am
Cos there’s nothing I would rather see
Than your face smiling back at me
I’ll be right here
Just as fast as I can

Cos you’re all I realy wanna do
I only want to be with you
Cos you blow my mind
Wanna share you love
Till the end of the time
Cos you’re all my wishes coming true
Nothings compares to you
You’re all I wanna do

I could win in the lottery
Wouldn’t mean that much to me
Guess you gotta make love to understand
I could rise in a jet black Benz
Movie stars could all be my friends
But I’d trade it in, For the touch of your hand

Cos you’re all I realy wanna do
I only want to be with you
Cos you blow my mind
Wanna share you love
Till the end of the time
Cos you’re all my wishes coming true
Nothings compares to you
You’re all I wanna do

Could it be all the things you say
Every time you look at me that way
I lose my mind, Cos you touched me in that special place
And my worries disappear without a trace, Every time

You’ll Never Be So Wrong

Song written by Ricky and Marty Wilde. Eighth track of the album Kim Wilde.
Also recorded by the band Hot Chocolate and released as a single by them. Kim’s recording was included on her debut album.

Live performances

‘You’ll Never Be So Wrong’ was performed live during the Debut Tour in 1982, the Catch Tour in 1983, the German tour in December 1992, the Perfect Girl tour in 2007 and the Dutch tour in November 2017.

Cover versions

‘You’ll Never Be So Wrong’ was covered by Neale Jackson.

Marty about ‘You’ll Never Be So Wrong’

After Chequered love had been accepted by Mickie he said: “Right, we need a B-side, you’d better go and write one.” We then wrote ‘You’ll Never Be So Wrong’ and it came in about an hour and a half, so we recorded it and it turned out pretty good. We took the track to Mickie and after he’d listened to it a couple of times he said it was too good to be a B-side and would like to have a crack at it with Hot Chocolate. He did a fabulous jobn with the song and Errol sang it beautifully. We also thought that Kim did a pretty nifty job on the old vocals. We thought it was the best track she’d ever sung. (1)

Marty Wilde: This song remains one of my clearest and most vivid songwriting memories. As I wrote the lyrics, I seemed to picture the entire scenario in my head – just as if I had been watching a film. The location I saw as France, and I can still visualise the startled look on the waiter’s face as the tearful girl rushed past him out of the cafe and back to her small flat. The song was – and still is – one of my favourites. I hope you like it too. (2)

Lyrics

Just two lovers in a seedy cafe
Someone’s leaving, the waiter says “Hey, won’t you wait”
Running nowhere, she hides in her room
What he told her had to get out and soon

It’s just a bad affair you’ve had
No need to cry, don’t take it bad
You’ll soon be glad when you’re far apart

You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
‘Cause I’m never gonna find that feeling again
I’m never gonna find that feeling again

Now she’s breaking but what can she do
Somewhere out there a car disappears out of view
Fumbles somewhere for stale cigarettes
Looks for numbers, the ones she could dial but forgets

No point in you just looking down
No way that you can turn it around
You’ve go to realise you”re free

You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
‘Cause I’m never gonna find that feeling again
I’m never gonna find that feeling again

No point in you just looking down
No way that you can turn it around
You’ve go to realise you’re free

You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
You’ll never be so wrong, not for a long time
‘Cause I’m never gonna find that feeling again
I’m never gonna find that feeling again

You’ll Be the One Who’ll Lose

Song written by Ricky, Kim and Marty Wilde. Seventh track of the album Close. Released as the B-side of the single Love in the Natural Way.

Kim about ‘You’ll Be the one Who’ll Lose’

This song describes how it feels to fall in love with the idea of falling in love. The atmospheric and reflective music dictated the subject matter, and once again a song came along to help ease the pain of growing up in public. (1)

I know what it’s like to have a broken heart. Luckily not too much, but enough to know what it feels like for somebody else. I wrote a song called You’ll Be the One Who’ll Lose [on her Close album] about a relationship that went nowhere with somebody that I cared about very much at the time. That song perfectly describes that situation. For me, songwriting has been a great therapy and a great way of working out the heartache of life. (2)

Lyrics

Guess I took it for granted
That you’d feel the same as me
Had enough of romances ending unromantically
You don’t take any chances
But you gamble aimlessly
Always running in circles
Keeping phoney company
You call’em up when you get in town
‘cos it’s time to play the game
Hangin’ out at the place to be
Where the people know your name

And I’m tryin’ to say
It doesn’t matter at all
It doesn’t matter what you do
I’m gonna leave you anyway
But I want you to know
You’ll be the one who’ll lose

It was foolish to kid myself
That love’s a guarantee
It’s an illusion that’s often sold
But never comes for free
Can you see what you’re losing
Oh, can you even really see
Seems you’re so busy moving, honey
You never even noticed you lost me
And I’m trying to say
It doesn’t matter at all
It doesn’t matter how you feel
I’m gonna say it anyway
Cos I want you to know
You’ll be the one who’ll lose

You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

Song written by Pete Burns, Steve Coy, Wayne Hussey, Tim Lever and Mike Percy and originally recorded by their band Dead or Alive.

Dead or Alive version

Pete Burns admitted in his autobiography that two songs were the inspiration for ‘You Spin Me Round’: ‘I Wanted Your Love’ by Luther Vandross and ‘See You ’round Like a Record’ by Little Nell. During the recording of the song, producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman took on a confrontational attitude, which was met by an equally confrontational attitude from the band. The record company was unenthusiastic about the song, so Burns took out a £2,500 loan to record it. After its original release on 5 November 1984, the single topped the UK singles chart, as well as reaching top 10 almost worldwide.

Kim Wilde version

‘You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)’ was performed live during the Dutch tours in October 2016 and October 2017, the tour with Howard Jones in Australia in 2017 and the Wilde Wild Xmas Show in December 2017.

Lyrics

If I, I get to know your name
Well if I, could trace your private number, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
I want some, want some

I got my sights on you (and no one else will do)
And I, I need to get you just a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re having fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I I wanna be your friend
And I I want to get you just a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out, here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I want your love
I need your love

All I know is that to me
You look like you’re lots of fun
Open up your lovin’ arms
Watch out, watch out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I want your love
I need your love

You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
You spin me right round, baby
Right round right round
