In the puppy-fat days of Kids in America, Kim Wilde had a naughty appeal. But now she’s a bit too old to get away with just a pout and a ‘butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth’ sidelong glance. She’s way out of her depth on tracks like ‘Hit Him’, ‘Another step’, ‘The thrill of it’and, especially ‘I’ve got so much love’ where she takes on a Pat Benatar-style backing and loses by a submission.
Kim just about gets away with the sugary soul of ‘She hasn’t got time for you’ and ‘Brothers’, but there are legions of young talents able to make a more earnest and less breathy job of them.
