Musical Tommy in Londen closes

The performances of the musical Tommy in London will be stopped. The show, which was co-produced by Joop van den Ende Theatre Productions, was performed for a year in the Shaftesbury Theatre, but suffers from low audience figures now.

However, Tommy was nominated eight times this week for the Sir Laurence Olivier Award, the most important English theatre award. This makes Tommy the most nominated London production.

The musical Tommy, which is based on a rock opera by the popgroup The Who, was premiered in 1993 on Broadway. In London the title role was played by the young actor and singer Paul Keaton, who previously worked in a supermarket. The former pop star Kim Wilde played the role of Mrs. Walker.

Joop van den Ende announced to start a European tour of Tommy in September 1997.
