Wilde World: Barnens bästa bitar

Kim Wilde’s first records were written and produced by her father and brother, Marty and Ricky. The three of them have had a great influence on the music world, as this regular series ‘Wilde World’ shows.

The influence of the Wilde family is so big, that even children are brought in contact with their compositions. They never wrote a song specifically for children – although Marty did write for a school musical once, apparently – but Ricky’s 1972 single ‘I am an astronaut’ was such a big hit in Scandinavia that the song even ended up on an album aimed at children explicitly.

‘Barnens bästa bitar’ (‘Children’s best bits’) is an LP featuring many wellknown melodies as performed by an uncredited cast of singers. They are only described as ‘children from Boo-Nacka music school under the direction of Marianne Ottosson, Katarina and Karin Stigmark, Claes Dieden and Göran Wiklund’. Other tracks on the album are covers of ‘I wanna be like you’ (from the movie Junglebook) and the theme from Pippi Longstocking. ‘Jag är en astronaut’, a Swedish translation of ‘I am an astronaut’ is sung by one of the unknown children and blends in effortlessly with the other tracks on the album. And yes, you can listen to it here!
