Kim Wilde’s first records were written and produced by her father and brother, Marty and Ricky. The three of them have had a great influence on the music world, as this regular series ‘Wilde World’ shows.
The Wildes didn’t just work with famous names, they also helped launch a few careers… although not every career took off so well. Take for example the singer Charley. In real life, she was an actress called Michelle Charles, who played the character Charley in the BBC television series ‘Byker Grove’, which ran between 1989 and 1996.
Her 1990 single ‘The best thing’ was meant as a spinoff from the TV series, in which the character Charley was singing as well. The 12″ single and CD-single featured the B-side You don’t know me, which was written by Kim Wilde and Tony Swain. The single did not become a hit. Many Kim Wilde fans didn’t find out about this release at the time, and because of that, it has become a bit of a rarity. You can listen to the song below.
‘Charley’ released one more single, then disappeared from view. Michelle Charles continued her acting career. After leaving Byker Grove in 1993, she appeared in TV series such as Cardiac Arrest (1996), The wingless bird (1997) and Murder by the book (2006).
