Kim Wilde’s first records were written and produced by her father and brother, Marty and Ricky. The three of them have had a great influence on the music world, as this regular series ‘Wilde World’ shows.
Every country has its embarrassing regional or local traditions, and the Netherlands are no exception. There are so-called ‘dweilorkesten’, translated best as marching bands, playing music during events and parties. A local marching band like De Schuimkragen. Based in Haarlem, they have been around for decades and are still at it these days.
Back in 2008, they released the cd ‘Millenniumproef’ and it features a good representation of the band’s repertoire. It features Dutch standards like ”t Woonschip’, ”t Dondert en ‘t bliksemt’, but also international hits like ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Happy together’, ‘Do wah diddy diddy’ and ‘Da doo run run’. But most importantly, it features an instrumental gem called ‘Abergavenny’ – a version, obviously, of Marty Wilde’s 1968 hit in Europe. You can listen to it here.
